A new production of George Bernard Shaw’s play Saint Joan will feature Mandipa Kabanda in the title role, offering a fresh interpretation of the Joan of Arc story.
Mandipa Kabanda cast as Joan of Arc
Mandipa Kabanda stars as Joan in Saint Joan, a play co-produced by Raw Material, Perth Theatre, and Aberdeen Performing Arts, and presented in association with the Citizens Theatre.
The play focuses on Joan as a young woman who challenges those in power and makes established institutions respond to her actions.

What this Saint Joan is about
I just finished watching Saint Joan, and it’s a truly compelling film. It tells the incredible true story of Joan of Arc, a teenager who remarkably rose to lead the French army and ultimately helped them win the Hundred Years’ War. It’s a powerful and moving depiction of her life.
This updated story explores themes of power, gender, and young people driving change, highlighting how individuals from underrepresented communities can influence global events.
This version of Joan of Arc’s story presents her as the type of unexpected leader history often creates, making it especially relevant during times of political turmoil and conflict.

How the production is being updated for the 2020s
This production of Saint Joan features a minimalist, intimate staging directed by Stewart Laing, who previously worked with Untitled Projects. It also incorporates a film created by Adura Onashile, combining live acting with a filmed element to give the story a more powerful and contemporary feel.
