As a child of the late ’90s and early ’00s, I can confidently say that Malcolm in the Middle was a staple in my household. The chaotic humor, the witty dialogue, and the unique narrative structure made it stand out among its peers. So, hearing about the revival of this beloved series brings me immense joy!
Since Disney+ debuted in 2019, it has been resurrecting one Disney television show after another. Now, they’re aiming to rejuvenate their Fox-acquired properties. As reported by Deadline, a revival of the beloved sitcom Malcolm in the Middle is making its way onto the streaming platform. The original cast members Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek will reprise their roles as Malcolm and his parents Hal and Lois. Also returning are creator Linwood Boomer, who will pen all four episodes, and director Ken Kwapis, who will helm each one. This revival will consist of just four episodes in total. Here’s the official description for the comeback:
Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter find themselves caught up in the whirlwind of their family’s drama as Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) insist that he attend their 40th wedding anniversary celebration.
It seems that Christopher Kennedy Masterson and Justin Berfield, the actors who portrayed Malcolm’s brothers Francis and Reese in the original series, might make a comeback. Yet, it hasn’t been confirmed officially. On the other hand, Erik Per Sullivan, the actor who played Malcolm’s younger brother Dewey, is highly unlikely to return as he retired from acting more than 15 years ago and hasn’t participated in any reunions since then. You might recall how the Brady Bunch reunions had stand-ins like “Fake Jane” or “Fake Cindy.” There’s a possibility they could recast Dewey, giving us a “Fake Dewey” instead.
Originally airing from January 2000 to May 2006, spanning seven seasons and more than 150 episodes, “Malcolm in the Middle” might not always receive the recognition it deserves. However, its impact on television cannot be underestimated as it revolutionized the single-camera sitcom genre. Breaking away from the traditional multi-camera format prevalent at that time, this series set a new standard for comedy shows. It laid the groundwork for subsequent hit shows like “The Office” and “Modern Family.” As for the anticipated return of “Malcolm in the Middle,” there’s no official news yet, but speculation points to a potential debut on Disney+ around 2025, coinciding with the show’s 25th anniversary.
