Maggie Gyllenhaal Explains Her Inspirations for THE BRIDE!

Maggie Gyllenhaal is well-known as an actress, having appeared in films such as The Dark Knight. However, she also proved her talent behind the camera by writing and directing The Lost Daughter, which earned her an Oscar nomination. Now, Gyllenhaal is taking on a new project: a modern reimagining of the classic horror film The Bride of Frankenstein, simply titled The Bride!. The film reunites her with Christian Bale, her former co-star from The Dark Knight, who will play Frankenstein’s monster, and also stars Jessie Buckley, known for her role in Hamnet, as the Bride. TopMob recently attended a virtual event where Gyllenhaal discussed her inspiration for revisiting this famous horror story.

Gyllenhaal described being at a party and noticing a man with a full forearm tattoo of the Bride of Frankenstein, which immediately caught his attention. He’d been considering various projects, but nothing felt right. Seeing the tattoo made him wonder if he’d actually seen the original film. He knew the character and the image, so he researched Elsa Lanchester, the actress who originally played the Bride. He was struck by her powerful presence and unique look, finding something truly impressive about her portrayal.

I recently watched the 1936 Bride of Frankenstein, and honestly, it blew me away. What struck me most wasn’t the story itself, but Elsa Lanchester’s performance. Despite barely being in the film – maybe three minutes total – and not saying a single line, she’s completely unforgettable. It really made me think – she’s just…cool. It’s a fresh realization, but the moment she ‘wakes up,’ she essentially says ‘no’ – a surprisingly bold move for that era, and that’s what makes her so powerful.

Gyllenhaal described the film’s style as a blend of influences from various classic movies. She wanted to put a fresh spin on familiar aesthetics, drawing inspiration from films like Bonnie and Clyde, Badlands, and even Metropolis. She also mentioned Wild at Heart as an example of a film that playfully challenges those classic styles – though in a different way than she approached her own work. Ultimately, she explained that she allowed herself creative freedom, letting ideas flow naturally while still acknowledging the significant impact of these inspirations.

The new film, The Bride!, takes place in the 1930s, the same period as the original movie. However, director Maggie Gyllenhaal initially envisioned a much earlier setting. She first considered the 1860s and 1870s, a time when communicating with the deceased was a popular practice due to the rise of spiritualism and the aftermath of the Civil War. Many women were also experiencing the loss of children, leading Gyllenhaal to believe that speaking to the dead would have been a commonly accepted role, similar to a therapist. She felt this historical context would be a compelling backdrop for a story about people returning from the dead, even though Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is actually set much earlier, in 1820.

Gyllenhaal decided to set her film in a time when movies existed after realizing her character, Frankenstein’s monster, needed a connection to a celebrity. She explained that Frankenstein is incredibly lonely and, before the story begins, his most significant relationship is with a movie star – someone he can feel a connection to, even though that person doesn’t know him. She also noted that Frankenstein, often frightening people, would be safe and anonymous in a movie theater. Once she knew she wanted this connection, she decided to place the story in an era where movies were popular.

Movies were made before and after the 1930s, but that decade is often considered Hollywood’s Golden Age. When asked why she chose that time period for her film, Gyllenhaal explained it was for aesthetic reasons. She loves the look and feel of 1930s movies, describing them as purely fantastical. She was interested in exploring the contrast between fantasy and reality, and questioning what truly makes a love affair satisfying. While the film The Bride! is set in the 1930s, Gyllenhaal clarified that it’s not a strict historical representation, but rather “The ’30s as seen through the lens of downtown New York in 1981.”

Gyllenhaal drew inspiration from both the 1930s and the early 1980s punk scene in New York City for the film. When asked if a particular song captured the movie’s feeling, he pointed to Siouxsie and the Banshees’ cover of Iggy Pop’s “The Passenger.” He explained that the song’s lyrics are fitting because, despite the title, the character is not a passenger – she’s the one in control of the narrative and driving the story forward.

The film boasts an impressive cast, featuring Annette Benning alongside her husband, Peter Sarsgaard, and, after a 25-year gap, her brother, Jake Gyllenhaal. Interestingly, Jake wasn’t her initial choice for the role. She explained that she asked him last, specifically because the character – a classic movie star – required a delicate dynamic between them. She ultimately felt it was a perfect fit, and it was a joyful experience. They hadn’t worked together since the 2001 film Donnie Darko, and she often found herself laughing uncontrollably on set. While she enjoys working with all her actors, she admitted there was something uniquely special about collaborating with her brother.

The classic James Whale film isn’t known for being romantic, especially since the Bride has very little screen time. However, Maggie Gyllenhaal says her version will be different. She describes the movie as a deeply emotional love story, even if the connection between the characters isn’t perfect. She believes all love stories are imperfect, and that’s what makes them relatable. Gyllenhaal hopes her film will connect with audiences by honestly portraying the complex mix of joy, pain, and brokenness that often defines love.

The Bride! arrives in theaters on March 6.
