John Capodice, a well-known character actor, passed away on December 30. Over the decades, he graced numerous productions such as Seinfeld, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, General Hospital, and many others with his talent. For video game enthusiasts, his voice may be familiar as Sidney “The Fat Man” Pen in the popular Mafia II series.
In the gripping fifth chapter of The Buzzsaw, I find myself hot on the trail of Sidney Pen, the menacing antagonist who threatens the game’s hero. It seems that my character has been hired by Alberto Clemente, a former business partner of The Fat Man, to eliminate him. To reveal that my character succeeds in this mission, even after fifteen years since the game’s release, might not be much of a surprise to some, but it’s still an exhilarating challenge for me!
In the course of a long and illustrious career, Capodice excelled in numerous parts, proving that even seemingly minor roles can make a significant impact, as encapsulated by the phrase “there are no minor roles, only minor actors.” Whether portraying a ruthless mob boss or a gentle paternal figure, Capodice’s performances were always exceptional. Voice acting in video games is by no means an easy feat.
It’s challenging to express complex feelings like love, rage, or the command to summon a colossal dragon when working within the limited space of a studio. Even some of the most talented actors have struggled with this task. Doesn’t anyone recall the hilarious scene from “Game of Thrones” where Peter Dinklage’s character hinted at a moon-originating wizard?
The delivery was bland, detached from the action, and subsequently rose to fame as a meme. Voiceover artists frequently perform an underappreciated role, enriching the realms we invest significant time in, whether they’re interstellar epics or the crime-ridden streets of the 1940s.
2K Games has hinted at a fresh installment in the Mafia series, focusing on the roots of organized crime in early 1900’s Sicily, titled “Mafia: The Old Country”. Check out the latest video teaser for this exciting journey: [Trailer Link]
