24-year-old Rocco Ritchie, who is known as the son of famous pop star Madonna and movie director Guy Ritchie, has made it clear that he doesn’t agree with being labeled a “nepo baby” – a term often used to describe individuals who gain opportunities in entertainment due to their family connections. In an interview with Fantastic Man magazine, Rocco openly discussed his thoughts on nepotism.
Rocco, with six exhibitions under his belt so far, feels he’s forged his own path in the art world, regardless of his well-known parents. Initially, when he joined the art scene, he maintained a low profile by adopting the name Rhed. However, he later chose to discard that alias in 2022 and, shortly afterward, held an art exhibition in London during the following year.
He mentioned that it’s amusing how, in times past, stunningly magnificent cathedrals were erected over numerous generations by the same family line,” he remarked.
Yet, he feels that the “nepo babies” of today aren’t quite as intriguing, he remarked. Similarly, Rocco dismissed any connections to the label, stating he never found it easy mingling with high-class circles, instead feeling uneasy.
He found it more enjoyable spending time with skateboarders on London’s South Bank, compared to individuals from affluent groups. The local company made him feel comfortable, and he looked back fondly on those days as among the best in his life.
Regarding the upper class, he never found them captivating. Reflecting on his past, Rocco left the esteemed Central Saint Martins art school in London, following a critique from a teacher who deemed his artwork as “overly masculine.
He shared that the art instructor planned to label the painting as obscene, a viewpoint he opposed. “At age eighteen, I was creating subpar figurative artwork; at that point in time, my work wasn’t mature or refined enough for anyone to form opinions about it,” he further stated.
Following the transfer, he found a sense of belonging at the Royal Drawing School in Shoreditch and eventually chose to live independently away from his family’s home. The couple, Madonna and Ritchie, got married in 2000 but parted ways after eight years together. They share a son named David Banda, now 19, who they adopted from an orphanage in Malawi in 2006.
