Madonna Teams with Shawn Levy for Netflix Limited Series Based on Her Life and Career

A while ago, pop music legend Madonna revealed plans to pen and direct a biopic about her life, collaborating with screenwriter Diablo Cody from the movie “Juno”. However, that project didn’t come to fruition. But true to her style, Madonna seems to have revamped the concept. As per “Deadline”, Madonna and Shawn Levy, director of “Deadpool” and “Wolverine”, are now working together on a Netflix limited series based on Madonna’s life. It is rumored that Julia Garner, known for her role in “Ozark” and soon to be the Silver Surfer, is still in discussions to portray Madonna. Nonetheless, no agreements have been made official as of yet.

While penning the screenplay, Madonna sought opinions from her online followers on whether the project should be a movie or a series. The majority of fans preferred a “series” since Madonna’s life and career span multiple decades, making it more suitable for a TV series rather than a two-hour film. It seems she has taken their advice, as there appears to be ample material for a television season. Throughout the years, each new album by Madonna sparked pop culture debates. From causing a stir with “Like a Virgin” at the first MTV VMAs, to facing excommunication from the Catholic Church over “Like a Prayer,” and publishing her controversial book of erotica titled “Sex” – these are only the events from the initial decade! Add to that her high-profile romances with figures like Sean Penn, Prince, Warren Beatty, and Guy Ritchie. Not to mention her longstanding support for LGBTQ rights and AIDS prevention efforts. Clearly, this rich tapestry of experiences is too vast for a single film.

It might appear puzzling that Shawn Levy is involved, but there’s a good reason for it. Known for her reluctance to license her music for films and TV, Madonna made an exception with “Material Girl” in ‘Stranger Things’, which Levy produced. Also, “Like a Prayer” was used during a crucial scene in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. Initially intended as a feature film, the project, this one potentially a mini-series, was originally slated to be directed by Madonna herself. It’s unknown if she plans to direct it now, but considering her history, it wouldn’t be surprising if she took the director’s chair for some episodes. Initially titled ‘Who’s That Girl’, based on one of her ’80s hits, given that this project spans over four decades of her career, we propose ‘Live to Tell’ as a more fitting title, referencing another one of her songs instead.
