In the late ’80s and early ’90s, Macaulay Culkin gained widespread recognition due to his role in Home Alone, making him a familiar face in many households. However, by the mid-1990s, he took a break from acting and didn’t appear in any films for almost a decade.
Though it remains uncertain about numerous roles he might have taken during that span, Culkin has lately disclosed one potential role that could have significantly impacted his career trajectory.
On the YouTube series Hot Ones, Culkin revealed that he had received a script for Wes Anderson’s movie “Rushmore,” but never bothered to go through it. He explained, “I used to be quite an avid reader, devouring scripts as they came, but a few somehow got missed. About two years after I received the script, while tidying up and discarding old papers, I stumbled upon the one I hadn’t read – it was ‘Rushmore.’
“I was like, ‘Oh dang, I probably could’ve done that one,’” he said.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder over what could have been if Macaulay Culkin had been cast in the film, even though receiving the script doesn’t necessarily mean he would have gotten the role. It certainly sparks curiosity to imagine how his unique talents might have added another layer to the cinematic experience we eventually enjoyed.
Initially, Jason Schwartzman made his acting debut in the movie Rushmore. His portrayal received positive reviews from critics, leading him to work frequently with director Wes Anderson thereafter.
‘Even though I can’t fathom any other actor taking it on, it makes me think, ‘What a fun and tasty turn that could have been!'” he remarked.
In this movie named Rushmore, Max Fischer, a high school student, finds himself intrigued by an elementary school teacher. Interestingly, his mentor, portrayed by Bill Murray, also forms a bond with her. Over the years, Culkin’s distinctive charm and offbeat persona, which he has showcased in various roles since his acting comeback, would have added an exceptional touch to the character of Max Fischer.
In 1998, the critically acclaimed indie film “Rushmore” was jointly penned by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson. Not only did it serve as a breakthrough for Jason Schwartzman’s career, but it also provided Bill Murray with an opportunity to shine in independent films once again.
The movie garnered acclaim from critics, picked up accolades at the Independent Spirit Awards, and was chosen for long-term preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry in 2016, as it’s considered “notable for its cultural, historical, or artistic value.
It’d be quite intriguing, even just hypothetically, to imagine Macaulay Culkin and Bill Murray acting together in a film directed by Wes Anderson. What a tantalizing prospect that would be!
