In an interview with the American Film Institute, M. Night Shyamalan discussed what makes a movie truly great, distinguishing between films he simply likes and those he considers masterpieces.
Before sharing his choices, the director, who is of Indian-American descent, explained the difference between something he personally likes and what he considers the very best.
Shyamalan explained that while it’s hard to pick a single ‘favorite’ movie, he considers ‘The Godfather’ to be the best ever made. He described the 1972 film as perfect.
He highly commended the film’s consistent and skillful tone and direction. He described it as a truly perfect movie, noting its seamless quality from start to finish—something rarely seen, as most films have minor flaws or imperfections that add character.
M. Night Shyamalan praised Francis Ford Coppola’s skill in creating a consistent and effective mood, saying, “For me, The Godfather is remarkable because it’s so perfectly in control of its atmosphere and identity. I think a director’s greatest achievement is mastering tone, and that film does it better than any other.”
The Godfather is considered a cinematic masterpiece and received high praise when it came out for its compelling story, skillful direction, and outstanding acting.
Reviewers highly commended Coppola’s skill in weaving together a complex story with well-developed characters. Marlon Brando’s unforgettable portrayal of Vito Corleone earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor, and the film itself won Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture. It continues to be a major influence on filmmaking, frequently used as a standard for excellent storytelling and production quality.
Shyamalan then talked about his “favorite movie,” explaining it was a personal pick based on what he enjoys, not necessarily what critics praise. He said, “When I say ‘favorite movie,’ it’s something you feel a little guilty about liking, something that reveals a bit about who you are and what makes you happy. For me, that movie is Raiders of the Lost Ark. “
The 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark, starring Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, remains a favorite among movie fans around the globe. Director M. Night Shyamalan says it’s simply a really fun and exciting movie, and his personal choice when he wants to be entertained.
Raiders of the Lost Ark was a hit with both critics and audiences. When it came out, reviewers loved its exciting action, captivating plot, and Harrison Ford’s charming performance.
The film won several Academy Awards, recognizing its exceptional art direction, film editing, and sound design. It also helped launch Harrison Ford to superstardom. To this day, audiences praise its creative action sequences, thrilling scenes, and Steven Spielberg’s skillful directing.
M. Night Shyamalan’s favorite films show he appreciates both technically brilliant filmmaking and movies that are just plain fun. He sees The Godfather as a perfect example of skillful, controlled filmmaking, and Raiders of the Lost Ark as a thrilling and enjoyable story.
