Previously featured Love Island USA contestant Cierra Ortega has extended a heartfelt apology following the re-emergence of past social media content where she employed a derogatory term towards Asian individuals. Ortega, who formed one of the season’s power couples, departed the villa only a week before the reality show’s conclusion.
In a TikTok video shared on Wednesday, lasting nearly five minutes, Cierra Ortega expressed her sincere regret to the Asian community. She clarified, “This isn’t an apology video; it’s a video about accountability.” Ortega further explained, “I didn’t realize that the term I used would cause so much pain, inflict such harm, or carry the history it did, if I had known, I wouldn’t have used it.
Ortega says there’s no excuse for ignorance
As a follower, I’d like to share my perspective based on Ortega’s words: “I didn’t intend any harm when I used that word, but I understand that good intentions don’t always justify ignorance. After being back in the U.S. for just two days, I’ve experienced the harshness of the backlash affecting my family.
She expressed concern about her family not feeling secure at their home, and they have even had immigration authorities contact them. Ortega advised the audience, “There’s no need to respond to hate with more hate. I don’t think that’s justice.” She pledged, “If you want assurance that your voice is being heard, that I’m sorry, and that I will change my actions, that’s what I will do.
Here’s what happened inside the villa
During Sunday’s episode, it was revealed that Ortega had left the villa due to a personal matter. Host Iain Stirling shared this news, and Ortega herself acknowledged the network’s decision to remove her from the villa, stating that she fully supports it. She further mentioned that the consequence for this action has been duly served.
In a recent episode that aired on Tuesday, she didn’t talk about her Love Island USA partner, Nic Vansteenberghe, who remains in the villa and recently reconnected with Orlandria Carthen. This pair is still vying for the $100,000 prize as their journey continues.
