Logan Paul Sets His Sights on Playing Marvel’s Quasar – Fans React!

On platform X, Logan Paul expressed his desire to portray Marvel’s Quasar, a character known as Wendell Vaughn, the Universe’s Guardian and Cosmic Champion, in comic books.

The WWE Superstar who’s also an influencer posted a photo featuring him alongside an illustration reminiscent of Quasar, a character from the 1993 Marvel Universe trading card series.

Logan Paul expressed his hope that Marvel would create a movie role for him as Quasar in the near future by tweeting, ‘Marvel, let’s get this movie going so I can play Quasar!’ This post has been shared 5.7k times, received 5.4k likes, and generated nearly 2k comments.

Who is Wendell Vaughn Quasar?

My intro to Marvel Cosmic

To put it simply, my inspiration for building this site partially stemmed from the character Wendell Vaughn Quasar. As a child, I recall browsing through the comics at my local shop and being drawn to Mark Gruenwald’s “Quasar” #2. The captivating blend of Quasar’s superhero appearance (which reminded me of Superman), his alien origins, and intriguing setting immediately caught my eye. Ever since then, I’ve been a devoted fan of Quasar. In my mind, Quasar is a mix of Captain America, Superman, The Flash, and Green Lantern, with even “Ma and Pa Kent” making an appearance in some issues! It’s well-known that Mark Gruenwald was a dedicated DC Comics fan but fiercely loyal to Marvel. He penned the 12-issue series “Squadron Supreme,” which served as a counterpart to DC’s Justice League. Following his passing, it’s said that they used some of Mark Gruenwald’s blood in the ink for a reprint of “Squadron Supreme.”

Enter Annihilation

In approximately 2005/6, Marvel Comics terminated the character Quasar in the event called Annihilation. To replace Quasar, they introduced an alien clone who was a space-faring lesbian, dramatically altering the original character’s traits. This situation seems reminiscent to you? A group of fans and I, passionate about Quasar, mobilized at QuantumZone.org, a dedicated fan site. We rallied Marvel to reintroduce Wendell Vaughn as Quasar by sending them various items such as the iconic Quasar cake (shown below), physical petitions with genuine signatures, artwork, t-shirts (I still have mine), and more. At that time, I had initiated the “Bring Back Wendell Vaughn as Quasar” website and newsletter. Interestingly enough, Marvel Comics editor Bill Rosemann subscribed to our cause.

Rabid cosmic fans

After Andy Schmidt’s departure following “Annihilation”, it was Rosemann who assumed control of Marvel Cosmic, working alongside Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Together they produced the Nova 2007 series, “Annihilation: Conquest”, the 2008 “Guardians of the Galaxy” series that served as inspiration for the James Gunn MCU films, among other projects. At this time, Marvel Comics showed little interest in Marvel Cosmic. To address this gap, I established a website called Cosmic Book News. Rosemann affectionately referred to our dedicated followers as the “rabid” cosmic fans. He provided us with exclusive previews, we conducted exclusive interviews with the creative teams, sent them our reviews, were featured in Marvel Comics solicits, and even had our reviews displayed as blurbs on covers. At Marvel’s request, we also offered feedback on Nova. In fact, Rosemann acknowledged that it was the fans who played a crucial role in bringing the MCU movie version of “Guardians” to life. Without the passion of fans like us, Gunn’s Guardians might never have come into being.

Saw it coming years before anyone

Returning to Quasar, Bill Rosemann reinstated Wendell Vaughn in that role, which fans preferred over Phyla-Vell. In a similar turn of events, Marvel replaced Captain Marvel, only to bring her back in “Secret Invasion.” However, it seemed the Mar-Vell storyline had been sidelined for Carol Danvers as the new Captain Marvel. Indeed, I noticed the so-called “woke mindset” long before most, years prior to “woke” becoming a term. Ever since, I’ve been waging this battle.

The Cosmic Avenger

In the sixty-issue run of “Quasar” by writer Mike Friedrich and subsequent appearances in “The Avengers,” Quasar presents a fresh perspective on what it means to be a superhero. Wendell Vaughn, a character with immense powers within the Marvel Universe (a fun trivia: Greg Capullo redesigned Quasar’s costume), struggles with self-doubt, which might seem counterintuitive given his power level, yet it contributes to his unique character. He often respectfully addresses villains as “sir” and has a quirk of being polite even in adversity.

As a child, I wrote a letter expressing my dislike for this self-doubt trait in Quasar, but it’s become an integral part of his character development. When Quasar debuted in “Annihilation,” I was thrilled to see him team up with Nova, and the artwork was impressive, particularly the cover of “Annihilation: Nova” #3, which remains my favorite. Unfortunately, they killed off Quasar just as he was becoming more interesting! However, Quasar was eventually revived, even appearing as the lead in the “Realm of Kings” one-shot. This was around the time Marvel Cosmic was being cancelled (a long and complex story), and writers Abnett and Lanning reverted Quasar back to his self-doubting state, which I found disappointing.

Fast forward a few years, Marvel Comics replaced Quasar with another female version, which occurred during the Marvel NOW! era that has been criticized for negatively impacting both comics and the MCU (how did it fare for “The Marvels” and “Captain America: Brave New World”?).

Who should play Quasar?

As for my opinion on who should play Quasar, I’d pick Austin Butler over Logan Paul any day. It’s quite intriguing that Austin shares the middle name ‘Elvis’ with Quasar. And get this – there’s been a buzz that Marvel is considering actors like Austin Butler for the part of Richard Rider Nova. Frankly, I think Austin Butler would make an excellent Quasar. He bears a striking resemblance to him and possesses the modest personality of Wendell Vaughn. Now, I can see Logan Paul fitting well as Nova.

To put it straightforwardly, I think it wouldn’t be a bad thing if Logan Paul took on the role of Quasar. His tweet sparked quite a few amusing comments, and there’s no denying that he has a large following. With that, 6 million people were essentially introduced to Quasar! If he does indeed play Quasar, perhaps in an adaptation of “Annihilation” or even adapting the initial 25 issues which includes the highly underrated “Cosmos In Collision” event (issues #19-25)?! I sincerely hope that Logan Paul doesn’t get tricked with anything progressive (like a switcheroo). The fans’ message is clear: they don’t want any substitutes! I also hope that the storyline will initially focus on Quasar grappling with self-doubt but eventually develops into him becoming a strong and deserving superhero. I’ve longed to see Wendell show his fighting skills!

Those aren’t the Quantum-Bands

Concerning Marvel Cinematic Universe’s film “The Marvels,” there seems to be a mix-up with the devices referred to as Quantum-Bands. In actual comic books, they belong to another character known as Captain Marvel, and they allowed him to swap places with Rick Jones. The Nega Bands are what Wendell Vaughn possesses in the comics, and one must prove themselves worthy to wield them by passing a test. If unworthy, the consequences could be severe – obliteration from existence.

I’ve always admired the boundless potential of Quasar and Nova within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Just as the MCU thrived under visionaries like Favreau, Whedon, the Russos, and Gunn in its early days, it needs creators who cherish these comics and characters to bring them to life. After all, it was their passion that launched the MCU into stardom.

Unfortunately, following the epic conclusion of Endgame, Marvel made a curious decision: they urged their creators not to read the comics and hired individuals unfamiliar with the source material. You may wonder how this turned out? Well, let’s just say it didn’t quite have the same magic as before.
