Live-Action ‘Far Cry’ Series Coming to FX: All the Details So Far

FX is adapting the popular video game series Far Cry into a live-action show. Noah Hawley and Rob McElhenney are teaming up to create the series, and McElhenney will also be acting in it. Viewers in the U.S. will be able to watch on Hulu, and Disney+ will stream it internationally.

The series will be structured like the video games, with each season telling a completely new story. This means a new plot, different characters, and a unique location will be featured every season. McElhenney expressed how thrilled he is to be working on it, stating…

I’m thrilled to be working with Noah Hawley. Ubisoft has been incredibly supportive, allowing us to adapt such a beloved video game world. Plus, my team at FX has been consistently encouraging and believing in me throughout the process.

This project brings McElhenney back to work with Ubisoft. They previously collaborated on the Apple TV series Mythic Quest, which Ubisoft Film & Television helped create and produce.

Hawley shared what attracts him to the ‘Far Cry’ games, explaining that he sees them as similar to the show ‘Fargo.’ He described ‘Far Cry’ as an anthology series, where each game explores a different take on a central idea, just like each season of ‘Fargo’ presents a new variation on a theme.

It’s a dream to develop a large-scale, evolving action series that consistently examines what it means to be human, even amidst chaos. I’m thrilled to be working with Rob to bring our unique, bold, and playful vision to life on screen.

This marks the first time the popular video game series Far Cry will be adapted into a live-action TV show. While there have been previous adaptations – a direct-to-video movie in 2008 and the 2023 animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix on Netflix, which was based on Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon – this is a new direction for the franchise.

Far Cry is a popular series of first-person shooter games created by Ubisoft. The original game came out in 2004 and was developed by Crytek to demonstrate their game engine technology. Since then, Ubisoft, particularly its Montreal studio, has taken the lead in developing the Far Cry games.

The series now includes six main games, one major expansion, and a number of side games. Though they all focus on surviving in the wilderness and fighting against oppressive rulers, each game has its own unique storyline.

This game series is popular for letting players explore vast open worlds, enjoy both solo story campaigns and online multiplayer matches, and even design and share their own levels for competitive gaming. While it’s been praised for its fun gameplay and iconic villains, some reviewers feel it doesn’t always push boundaries with new ideas. However, despite this, the games have consistently sold very well.
