I remember when Disney brought Cinderella to life in live-action back in 2015, and honestly, it’s a fun idea to finally see what happened to her stepsisters! It’s been a while, but now they’re getting their own movie. Apparently, Akiva Schaeffer from The Lonely Island is directing a comedy called Stepsisters that focuses on those famously unpleasant relatives. I’m definitely curious to see their side of the story, even if they probably won’t be very sympathetic!
I’m so excited to hear that Disney is bringing back the team behind Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers! Apparently, they’re working on a new movie, and Adam Schaeffer is directing again. The script is being written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, but it’s based on an original idea from Michael Montemayor, who worked on Tangled. This time, the story will focus on Cinderella’s stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella, and why they just couldn’t seem to win Prince Charming’s heart, even with their mother’s help!
The director of last year’s Naked Gun reboot, Schaeffer, also co-wrote it with Gregor and Mand. While a Cinderella spin-off with the same humor would be fun to imagine, their 2022 film, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, is a much better preview of what to expect. It is a Disney movie, after all. However, that film’s self-aware style also suggests this won’t be a comedy for children. Any movie that featured the infamous “Ugly Sonic” isn’t really aimed at kids.

Not much is known about the movie yet, including when it will take place in relation to the original Cinderella story – whether before, during, or after. There’s a lot of potential for a humorous story focusing on the stepsisters during the events of the classic tale. However, it would also be interesting to see them deal with the consequences of their actions. Seeing them finally face repercussions – in animated or live-action form – is always enjoyable, and exploring how they live with those consequences could be even more compelling.
