Live-Action ‘Aladdin’ Sequel Reportedly Set to Start Filming Next Year

According to Production List, Disney is planning to film a follow-up to their live-action Aladdin movie starting next year. The original stars – Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith – are expected to return.

This project has been years in the making. As early as August 2019, producer Dan Lin hinted at a sequel, mentioning Disney had just begun initial development.

So, here’s the word from the studio: they’re really hoping Guy Ritchie returns to direct a second Aladdin film, and even more excitingly, they want Will Smith back as the Genie! They’re aiming for something that feels genuinely fresh and isn’t just a rehash of what we’ve seen before. Now, don’t expect a straight-up remake of the old direct-to-video sequels like The Return of Jafar or Aladdin and the King of Thieves. They might pull inspiration from those stories, but it won’t be a direct adaptation. They’re clearly trying to strike a balance between nostalgia and something new.

In February 2020, Variety reported that John Gatins and Andrea Berloff would be writing the screenplay. Lin and Jonathan Eirich were confirmed as producers, and the original stars—Massoud, Scott, and Smith—were likely to reprise their roles.

Although there was some doubt about whether a sequel would happen, especially with cancellation rumors in 2023, it now looks like the project is back on track. Mena Massoud shared on X (formerly Twitter) in May 2023 that a sequel to the live-action Aladdin is definitely planned, pointing to the original film’s success. He explained that the recent Hollywood strikes caused delays, but now that the strike has ended, he’s awaiting further news.

According to Production List, filming for the sequel is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2026. Locations will likely include London, various areas of England, and the United States. The movie will continue the story of the main character, a young street urchin, and his adventures with a magical genie as he tries to win Princess Jasmine’s affection.

Fans of both the 2019 live-action movie and the original 1992 animated film will be thrilled to hear that most of the original actors are returning for a continuation of the story.
