As a lifestyle expert reflecting on Lisa Marie Presley’s life, I find myself deeply saddened by her untimely passing and moved by her courage to share her struggles with substance misuse in her posthumous memoir. Her journey from witnessing her father’s drug addiction at a tender age to battling her own demons later in life is a testament to the power of trauma and its impact on an individual’s life.
TRIGGER WARNING: This article contains references to death and substance abuse.
According to Lisa Marie Presley’s autobiography, published after her death, we learn that she struggled with drug abuse following the birth of her twins in 2008. This battle included severe withdrawal symptoms due to her addiction to opioids.
On January 12, 2023, Lisa Marie Presley, aged 54, unfortunately passed away following complications from a minor intestinal blockage that had arisen due to past weight-loss surgery. At the time of her demise, traces of opioids were found in her system.
Yet, despite being just nine when he passed away due to drug-related health issues in 1977, Lisa Marie Presley had harbored deep concerns about her father, Elvis Presley, leaving her.
In her posthumous memoir, “From Here to the Great Unknown,” as highlighted in this week’s PEOPLE magazine cover story, Lisa Marie expresses her constant fear of her father’s demise. She recounts strange behavior she observed in him during their rare meetings and occasions where she found him unconscious. A line from a poem she wrote reads, “I hope my dad doesn’t pass away.
In a different part of the memoir, Lisa Marie reminisces about her youth, where she watched her father perform live on stage. This memory was unearthed later by Riley Keough, Lisa Marie’s daughter, as she listened to old cassette tapes filled with memories that Lisa Marie had recorded before her untimely death at 54 in 2023.
Lisa Marie, once a defiant teenager, turned to drug use several years following the death of Elvis Presley. After tying the knot with her first spouse, Danny Keough, and welcoming their child Riley at the age of 21, she experienced a long period of stability in her life.
Looking back on our 1994 divorce, I’ve shared in my memoir that Danny remained a steadfast pillar of support for me and our children. Alongside Riley, Lisa Marie, and myself, we had another son named Benjamin. Tragically, he took his life at the age of 27 in 2020.
Back in 2008, when I welcomed my beautiful twins Finley and Harper into the world with my then-husband, Michael Lockwood, little did I know that this joyous occasion would lead me down a path of addiction. After giving birth, I found myself grappling with a prescription painkiller dependency. Lisa Marie, that’s me, was ensnared by the very medication intended to alleviate my postpartum discomfort.
The album “From Here to the Great Unknown” by Lisa Marie Presley and Riley Keough is set for release on October 8th. You can now pre-order this album at any bookstore where music is sold.
