In his latest multi-decade film “Here,” director Robert Zemeckis collaborated once more with Forrest Gump stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, employing AI to depict the younger counterparts of the actors. During a recent interview on the Armchair Expert podcast, Kudrow expressed her disagreement with the movie’s promotion of artificial intelligence technology.
She explained that in the movie, they filmed a scene where they shot something, allowing them to review their performance as younger versions, and it was now ready for viewing. Kudrow commented on this, stating, “From what I gathered, this film seems to be promoting AI technology.
She made it clear that her comments about AI weren’t about it “spoiling” the movie, but rather stemmed from her worries regarding the potential impact on future actors, as they might end up doing more of “licensing and reusing” roles instead.
She additionally highlighted that if technology remains heavily utilized in movie-making, it could potentially eliminate opportunities for human involvement. “Leaving that aside for a moment, what jobs would remain for people?” she questioned further.
Kudrow pondered, “Is there some form of income given just for existing, without requiring work? It seems too good to be true, doesn’t it?” Interestingly, a film titled this was distributed by Sony Pictures in November, yet it failed to impress at the box office, amassing only $13 million globally.
Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that the movie could receive recognition for its impressive visual effects. Just recently, Variety announced that the film is one of the 20 nominees fighting for a place on the Oscars shortlist for Best Visual Effects. Moreover, it is among only three films that utilized artificial intelligence tools to create de-aging or synthetic human effects within the movie.
