Lisa Kudrow Recalls Frustration Over Filming Friends; Says THIS

As a dedicated fan of Lisa Kudrow and her iconic portrayal of Phoebe Buffay in Friends, I can relate to her unique perspective on filming with a live studio audience. Having grown up watching the show, I remember the infectious laughter that filled our living rooms every week. However, it’s fascinating to learn about the behind-the-scenes experience from Kudrow herself.

Lisa Kudrow is known for bringing genuine laughter to the screen. The actress, recognized for her role as Phoebe Buffay in the iconic TV show Friends, shared candidly about her filming process with a live studio audience.

Back in 1994, Friends initially hit the small screen with live audiences being a common practice for television production. However, Kudrow shared an annoyance – the audience’s prolonged and excessive laughter could be quite irritating for her during filming.

Lisa Kudrow was irritated by the audience’s long laughs

Lisa Kudrow, age 61, felt uncomfortable when the live audience overly amplified their laughter after she told a joke during Friends filming. In a recent episode of Conan O’Brien’s podcast, Kudrow shared an experience where the audience’s laughter would delay her between takes.

Host O’Brien playfully initiated the conversation by bringing up allegations that Kudrow felt annoyed when the studio audience continued to laugh excessively at her own humor during tapings. “They laughed for too long. It wasn’t really amusing. That was the reason, Lisa Kudrow explained on July 22.”

At times, I would glance over to check if they had been laughing excessively for too long, then say, “Let’s move on.” I used to get quite irritated about it back then. The actress from “Time Bandits” explained that prolonged laughter from the audience could throw off the pacing of the entire performance and cause delays in delivering subsequent lines with greater impact.

Additionally, Kudrow believed that Friends was more than just a show for a live audience in a studio. She expressed, “We’re not just performing for the people in the room. The real audience is at home.” Consequently, she wouldn’t focus on eliciting unnecessary laughter if it were a stage play and would instead find alternative methods to engage her character.

The star benefited in the end when the chuckles subsided after multiple attempts filming that particular scene. However, this incident hindered the writing team from exploring the humorous possibilities within the script, leading them to revise the scene and its dialogue instead.

Lisa Kudrow is well-known for portraying Phoebe Buffay in Friends for a decade. This quirky and amusing character, played by Kudrow, left a lasting impression on the show’s main cast. Phoebe was known for her enigmatic and eccentric personality, as well as her exceptional ability to make us laugh as a masseuse. She even gained recognition for composing the memorable tune “Smelly Cat,” showcasing her hidden musical talents.

Lisa Kudrow is rewatching Friends in Matthew Perry’s memory

Previously, the actress who starred in Friends revealed that she couldn’t bring herself to watch all episodes of the show due to her portrayal of Phoebe Buffay. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she expressed it as being “too mortifying” to rewatch her acting in those scenes.

After Matthew Perry passed away in October 2023, Kudrow shared that she had started re-watching Friends again as a tribute to him and his unique comedic talent.

If we focus on Matthew instead, that’s acceptable…it’s all about appreciating his humor – which is what I choose to recall about him. (The outlet interviewed Kudrow in June)

As a lifestyle expert, I can relate when someone cherishes an iconic character like Perry, who brought Chandler Bing to life so brilliantly. But when it comes to revisiting “Friends,” I can’t help but laugh out loud as I watch the six friends maneuver through their New York City lives. It’s almost like I’m right there with them!
