More than fifty years after first becoming famous in The Exorcist, Linda Blair continues to capture attention. At just 14 years old, she starred as Regan MacNeil in the film, which quickly became a classic known for its shocking and unsettling scenes. Blair’s performance was particularly praised for its realism and the way she handled such a challenging part.
Becoming famous so young was a mixed blessing for Blair. While she was suddenly getting a lot of attention, most of the roles offered were in low-budget horror films. She quickly became known for appearing in B-movies like Hell Night and Chained Heat. The poor reception of Exorcist II: The Heretic further complicated her career. Then, in 1977, a drug-related arrest threatened to derail everything, as it had for many other young actors.
Despite the challenges, Blair cleverly leaned into her iconic status. She hosted the show Scariest Places on Earth in 2000 and even appeared on Broadway in Grease. She playfully poked fun at her most famous role in the 1990 comedy Repossessed. Plus, guest spots on popular shows like Married… with Children and Supernatural kept her a familiar face in pop culture, even when she wasn’t starring in big movies.
Beyond her acting career, Blair is a passionate advocate for animals. In 2004, she started the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation, a charity that rescues and cares for abused animals. She also became vegan, finding that this lifestyle brought her a sense of purpose and calm after dealing with the stresses of Hollywood.
Even at 66, Blair appears energetic and cheerful. She made a comeback to acting in 2023 with The Exorcist: Believer and has suggested she might return to Hollywood, though she’s currently focused on her animals and a new memoir. The memoir is expected to reveal previously unknown stories about the making of The Exorcist.
