As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for entertainment trends, I find myself both intrigued and saddened by the absence of Lin-Manuel Miranda from Moana 2’s soundtrack. Having witnessed the magic that Miranda weaves in his compositions, it’s hard not to feel a pang of disappointment at seeing the sequel’s music receive mixed reviews.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the acclaimed composer of the original Moana, has explained why he chose not to rejoin for the eagerly awaited sequel, Moana 2. Contrary to what fans might have anticipated, the songwriter made it clear that his absence was due to the sequel’s production schedule and timing.
Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Moana 2 set a new record for the highest-ever box office debut among animated films. Audiences were thrilled to see Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson return to their roles, but they were taken aback to discover that Lin-Manuel Miranda, who created the iconic songs in the original 2016 Moana, was not credited for this sequel.
Despite differing opinions among fans about the quality of the sequel’s music, some critics finding it less impressive, the fact that Miranda is no longer involved in the project has sparked curiosity and speculation.
As a lifestyle aficionado sharing insights, I’d like to shed light on the reasons behind Lin-Manuel Miranda not returning to compose music for Moana 2. In his conversation with PEOPLE, Miranda himself clarified that the opportunity simply never presented itself for him to be a part of the project.
He shared that the sequel already had its team of songwriters. The production process for Moana 2 was already set when he was working on other projects, which prevented him from joining the sequel’s team.
Miranda mentioned that immediately after finishing work on Encanto, he received the Mufasa: The Lion King script, with no chance for him to contribute to Moana 2 first. He explained that Moana 2 was initially in development as a TV series featuring Emily [Bear] and Abigail [Barlow]. However, when the decision was made to transform it into a film, they were already well underway with the project, cooking up ideas for it.
In 2022, when Barlow and Bear became well-known for their creation, The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical, they were invited to compose the music for the upcoming film, Moana 2.
At present, they are the youngest and sole female composing tandem working on a significant Disney movie. In the same year, they received the Grammy Award for the Best Musical Theater Album, which makes them an intriguing pick for the upcoming sequel.
As a passionate admirer, I must admit that their participation has ignited a range of responses. Abigail Barlow, one part of this dynamic duo, addressed criticism regarding the music in an interview with Variety. In her own words, she predicted, “Allow a month to pass; the children will be singing it, and you’ll be weary of it.” This statement, made with confidence, has sparked considerable discussion online.
Some critics contend that this method seems more centered around contemporary, trendy pop tunes, as opposed to composing tracks with depth of emotion and narrative substance.
As Barlow and Bear were developing the music for Moana 2, they often sought guidance from Lin-Manuel Miranda. According to Abigail, he was easily reachable via a simple phone call over FaceTime.
Miranda provided resources, such as books on the art of musical theater storytelling, to the pair. “She mentioned that he handed her books from renowned musical theater storytellers, which focused on techniques for writing lyrics effectively and telling stories musically in a concise yet appealing manner,” she shared.
