As a die-hard fan of Lil Wayne since his Drought 3 days, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for him as he grapples with the news that Kendrick Lamar will be performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans instead of him. The city where it all started, the city that birthed the Mirror rapper. It’s like watching your favorite hometown team lose the championship to a rival squad.
More recently, Lil Wayne expressed his feelings regarding his non-selection for the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2025, which was to take place in his hometown of New Orleans. Contrarily, it’s Kendrick Lamar who has been selected as the main act.
On The Skip Bayless Show on December 17th, Wayne voiced his dissatisfaction about being overlooked but emphasized that there was no underlying tension between him and Lamar. During the discussion, he also addressed a particular lyric from Lamar’s Wacced Out Murals that seemed to pertain to this situation.
In the song, Lamar sings verses like: “Irony, I think my hard work may have overshadowed Lil Wayne” and “Won the Super Bowl, and only Nas congratulated me.” Lamar’s interpretation, as understood by Wayne, suggests that Lamar was recognizing the importance of his performance. However, Wayne made it clear that Lamar had no role in deciding the halftime show lineup.
In simpler terms, the rapper Mirror said, “I believe he recognized the importance of it for me, just like everyone else did. I think that’s what he was trying to convey. He couldn’t have controlled that situation. Therefore, he didn’t disappoint me.
Initially, I found myself bewildered and irked, but I encouraged Lamar to deliver an outstanding performance. I explained to him, “I’ve had a conversation with him, and I wish him nothing but the best. I told him he better shine – I mean, he made it there through his hard work, and my feeling of being let down is just me being upset that I didn’t get the chance.
He admitted that personally, it hurt not to have gotten the chance but said he was at fault for assuming he would be chosen without thinking of any other possibility.
The Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show takes place at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025, with Kendrick Lamar set to perform. Despite a slight sense of disappointment, Lil Wayne looks forward to the opportunities ahead, viewing it as motivation to strive for even better and more impressive performances in the future.
