For approximately 15 years following the debut of Disney’s initial major legacy sequel, “TRON: Legacy” (a sequel to the 1982 film “TRON”), the entire movie industry has undergone a transformation. Today, these late-stage continuations of cherished films are prevalent and often dominate franchises. As a result, Disney is now producing a legacy sequel to its own legacy sequel, with “TRON: Ares” set to release in an era where AI poses a genuine danger to mankind. However, it’s not through war or oppression, but rather by creating deceptive art. Nonetheless, the trailer looks intriguing.
Right off the bat, the trailer presents a fresh perspective on the Tron universe. Notably, the famed light cycles normally seen in the digital realm are now navigating real-world streets. Remarkably, one of these cycles splits a police car cleanly in half! That’s definitely pushing boundaries! The recurring color scheme for the high-tech elements is an intense red throughout. As you may remember, red has always symbolized the villains. Furthermore, we catch a glimpse of Greta Lee fleeing from a massive red airship. Quite thrilling, indeed.
The movie titled “TRON: Ares” is helmed by Joachim Rønning, who has experience directing Disney sequels such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”. In this film, Jared Leto takes on the main role as Ares, a self-aware computer program on a quest to unravel a real-world mystery. Apart from Leto and Lee, the cast includes Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, with Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges. As expected, the trailer concludes with Jeff Bridges’ distinctive voice growl.
What truly excites me about this production is the debut score by Nine Inch Nails. Besides being exceptionally talented film composers, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are among the best in the industry today. Unlike TRON: Legacy’s remarkable Daft Punk soundtrack, a gritty, industrial score from Nine Inch Nails will give this movie its unique edge. Unfortunately, Daft Punk is no longer together, making it impossible for them to return for this film. However, Nine Inch Nails offers a distinct shift in tone compared to Daft Punk, which aligns perfectly with the movie’s darker atmosphere.
I’m really looking forward to the new TRON movie, as the previous ones were visually stunning spectacles. I hope it continues that tradition. The idea of blending the dark and vibrant digital world into our reality might take some getting accustomed to, but since we’ve already explored a similar setting in Cyberpunk 2077, I think it will be a smooth transition for us.
TRON: Ares, filmed for IMAX, will hit cinemas October 10, 2025.
