Well, well, well. It seems a fresh chapter has been added to the LIBRA cryptocurrency drama, and, as you might expect, it’s not exactly the plot twist you’d hope to see in a Sunday afternoon romance. Judicial findings, as fresh as a newly-baked loaf of bread, have surfaced, suggesting that the relationship between Argentine President Javier Milei and LIBRA co-creator Hayden Mark Davis was, shall we say, “closer” than previously admitted. Oh, the plot thickens!
It all dates back to that fateful day in February 2025, when President Milei decided to do his part for the world economy by enthusiastically promoting the LIBRA token. Naturally, this had the expected effect: the cryptocurrency’s price shot up faster than a hungry cat on a hot tin roof, only to come crashing down just as swiftly, leaving behind a trail of $251 million in shredded investor dreams. But of course, that’s just the beginning of the story, old bean.
According to the latest reports, which I’m sure will be the subject of heated conversations over your next gin and tonic, Argentine court sources say that computer forensics experts from the Public Prosecutor’s Office have unearthed draft versions of a “confidential agreement” allegedly signed by Milei and Davis on January 30, 2025. Two weeks before the LIBRA launch and the inevitable collapse that followed. And here I was thinking this whole saga couldn’t get juicier!
LIBRA Deal Amid Milei Denials
The plot thickens even further, my friends, as it turns out that these drafts were discovered on an electronic device belonging to none other than Argentine lobbyist Mauricio Novelli. Now, Novelli, who has been in tight circles with Milei since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic (I mean, who hasn’t?), is no stranger to intrigue. The devices were seized as part of the investigation, and experts later reported that these drafts appeared in exchanges between Novelli and Davis. It seems they were trying to finalize the deal, all while President Milei was denying everything under the sun in front of cameras and microphones.
Despite Milei’s emphatic denials in February 2025 that he had never signed any agreement with Davis, and his repeated claims that he was, in fact, as innocent as a lamb, the drafts tell a rather different tale. These drafts-somewhat inconveniently for the president-suggest otherwise. Deny all you like, old boy, but it’s starting to look like the scandal has a little more meat on its bones than first imagined.
Further revelations came courtesy of a January 9 ruling from the Directorate of Technological Support for Criminal Investigations (Datip), a highly specialized forensic unit within the Public Prosecutor’s Office. It seems they, too, got in on the act, discovering multiple copies of this “confidential agreement” during the forensic review of Novelli’s communications with Davis. They appear to have been getting the paperwork ready for Milei’s eventual signature. It’s all terribly exciting, I must say.
Alleged Payment Requests Surface
As if the plot weren’t already as twisted as a pretzel, the Datip report sheds light on Novelli’s central role in the LIBRA affair. It seems that he was the man behind the curtain, pulling the strings between Milei, Davis, and several other figures-some of whom have rather, shall we say, questionable reputations.
Novelli’s communications included exchanges with none other than President Milei himself, as well as his sister, Karina Milei, along with the aforementioned Davis and others. However, it turns out that not all was smooth sailing. During the investigation, it became clear that many of Novelli’s devices had undergone some rather drastic spring cleaning, resulting in a mass deletion of data. I guess someone didn’t want their dirty laundry aired. Tsk, tsk.
Among the missing files were conversations between Novelli and Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano (ADA). After the LIBRA crash, Hoskinson publicly accused Novelli and Terrones Godoy of trying to extort five-figure dollar payments for arranging a meeting with President Milei at the Tech Forum. How very charming! They assured him that “magical things would happen” if he agreed. Naturally, Hoskinson turned them down, but the deleted conversations left us all wondering: what exactly were these “magical things”? Oh, to be a fly on the wall!
