7 months after Liam Payne’s unexpected passing, it is now confirmed that his former partner, Cheryl Cole, will handle the affairs of his approximately $32.2 million estate. Payne and Cole were a couple from the years 2016-2018.
31-year-old Payne, who tragically passed away in October from a drug-related fall off a hotel balcony in Argentina, didn’t have a written will. The former One Direction member leaves behind an 8-year-old son, Bear, who he shared with Cheryl, aged 41. Currently, Cheryl and solicitor Richard Mark Bray hold administrative authority over his estate.
On May 1st, court documents confirmed the appointment, which we have acquired by People, reveal that Payne’s UK-based estate is estimated to be approximately $38 million in gross value, translating to a net worth of about $32.2 million.
If someone dies in the U.K. without a valid will, their estate typically passes to their surviving spouse or closest relatives. In Payne’s case, since he had no legally recognized spouse, it was up to Cheryl (his next of kin) and his appointed legal representative to handle the affairs of his estate.
As reported by BBC, while Cheryl and Bray are set to oversee the property holdings within the estate, they currently lack the full authority to make distributions. Essentially, they can manage the funds but not distribute them at this time. Per the country’s laws, Bear, Payne’s son, stands to inherit his father’s entire estate, as children typically receive their parents’ entire properties when there is no surviving legal spouse or civil partner present.
From 2016 to 2018, Cheryl and Payne were romantically involved and welcomed their child, Bear, into the world in 2017. Following the musician’s demise, Cheryl expressed a deeply moving sentiment, describing it as “devastating.
For two years, Liam Payne was romantically involved with influencer Kate Cassidy. Sadly, his life was cut short when he fell from a hotel balcony in Argentina on October 16, 2024, leading to his death due to multiple traumatic injuries (polytrauma), as confirmed by an inquest held in the U.K.
His estate proceedings continue.
