
For years, Letterboxd has been the go-to social platform for movie lovers. People use it to review films, share their passion for classic and cult movies, and, especially, create lots of lists! Now, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Letterboxd has officially launched its new rental service, called Video Store. The service, first announced in November, lets users rent films displayed on virtual “shelves” organized into themed collections based on what members want to see.
This online store features two main sections. “Unreleased Gems” showcases recent festival films and older titles that didn’t get wide distribution – these will only be available for 30 days. “Lost and Found” highlights films that Letterboxd members already love and have been searching for. According to Letterboxd CEO Matthew Buchanan, the “Unreleased Gems” section was created because there are so many fantastic films that haven’t found a broad audience, but that Letterboxd’s community is eager to support.
Letterboxd launched Video Store to help independent, festival, and foreign language films overcome distribution challenges. As Buchanan explained, they wanted to expand on their existing mission by offering these films directly to viewers in a unique way. Video Store operates on a rent-as-you-go basis, without requiring a subscription. It’s currently available in 23 countries, with rental costs and film selection differing depending on location.
In the United States, renting movies online costs between $3.99 and $19.99. You can watch these movies on your TV using devices like Apple TV 4K, Chromecast, and AirPlay, or on your computer or mobile device (iOS and Android). They’re also planning to add apps for smart TVs in the future.
