Letterboxd Launches Video Store Platform for Rare Movie Rentals

Like many people, I’ve stopped using most social media – and it’s been great for my well-being. I made one exception: Letterboxd. It’s a website for movie lovers where you can track what you’ve watched, discover new films, and connect with other fans. Now, it’s becoming even more useful! Letterboxd is launching a video store in December, offering a place to watch films that are rare, popular, or haven’t been widely released. This means you’ll be able to watch movies shortly after adding them to your watchlist.

Letterboxd is launching a Video Store where users can rent movies from a hand-picked selection. Importantly, it’s not a subscription – you pay for each movie individually, like browsing the shelves of a traditional video store, but online.

According to the announcement, the shelves are curated using a huge amount of data, including watchlists, reviews, and other internal ranking factors. It’s similar to browsing the ‘staff picks’ section at a video store, except these recommendations come from millions of Letterboxd users worldwide.

  • Festival standouts that are yet to be distributed.
  • Long-watchlisted titles finally made available.
  • Restorations and rediscoveries worth celebrating.
  • Limited-time drops of sneak peeks and unreleased gems (only here for a short time).

This new service was created to let people watch the movies they actually want to see. The team behind it promises to add films based on what users add to their watchlists, rather than just choosing the easiest or most affordable options. It will initially be available on web browsers, iPhones and iPads, Android devices, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, and through AirPlay. They are also planning to release apps for other smart TVs soon.

As a total movie buff myself, I can tell you this film feels like a dream come true. If you’re anything like me and live and breathe cinema, definitely check out their website for more details.
