As an ardent fan with a nostalgic heart, I find myself eagerly anticipating Mel Gibson’s upcoming directorial ventures – Lethal Weapon 5 and The Passion of the Christ sequel. With his rich background in storytelling and his deep connection with these iconic franchises, there is no doubt that he will bring both projects to life with a unique flair.
Mel Gibson has some exciting upcoming projects lined up, including directing two major films: a fifth installment of Lethal Weapon and a sequel to The Passion of the Christ. In a recent interview, he shared that his plans to direct these films are currently tangled due to numerous obstacles and red tape, preventing them from getting off the ground. He also expressed his thoughts on which of these eagerly awaited sequels he would like to bring to fruition first.
In my conversations regarding our future projects with ComicBook, I mentioned that predicting which one will lead the pack is somewhat like playing a game of chance, or a ‘crapshoot’, due to numerous variables that can influence the process. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure which sequel will make its way to audiences first.
He shared with the media, “There are numerous hurdles to producing any movie, not just financial ones, but there are countless factors that can make or break a project. So it’s essentially a game of chance at this stage what gets off the ground first and which one came first, much like trying to determine if it was the chicken or the egg.
In the year 2021, it was disclosed that the actor known for Braveheart expressed his intent to take part in both directing and scriptwriting for Lethal Weapon 5. Furthermore, he shared that he would be stepping into the role previously held by Richard Donner, who had been working on the plot for the fifth film in the successful series prior to his passing.
In Steven Olexy’s podcast, Gibson discussed the project and mentioned that Donner entrusted him to lead it, a responsibility he considered an honor. He also hinted that the film would tackle some challenging topics, but reassured listeners that the comedic essence of the franchise wouldn’t be abandoned. Previously, Donner directed the original Lethal Weapon, featuring Gibson and Danny Glover, as well as four of its sequels. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2021.
Additionally, the actor known for What Women Want is also expected to take up directing duties for a sequel to his own movie, The Passion of the Christ from 2004. This upcoming film will focus on the resurrection. The original film directed, co-written, and co-produced by Gibson portrayed the final twelve hours of Jesus’ life and gained cult status.
The film was initially released in 2004, earning an impressive 600 million USD and holding the title for the highest-grossing R-rated movie at the box office until Deadpool and Wolverine. Although it garnered mostly positive reviews, it was also met with criticism due to its intense violence and dark themes. However, Mel Gibson remains dedicated to directing both upcoming projects: Lethal Weapon 5 and The Passion of the Christ.
