Leslye Headland, along with Amandla Stenberg, has finally spoken about why The Acolyte was cancelled. She suggests the issue wasn’t negative reviews, but rather criticism from fans and online commentators on YouTube.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Headland discussed how the way we talk about fans, online content creators, and the entertainment industry itself is changing, and how these groups are becoming increasingly out of touch with each other.

Headland Says The Acolyte Was “Always a Risk”
According to Headland, The Acolyte takes place in a period of the Star Wars timeline that isn’t strongly connected to the familiar stories. She explains that the show deliberately avoided elements like stormtroopers, the Rebel Alliance, or imagery from the original trilogy. Instead, she drew inspiration from the High Republic books and the visual style of lightsaber combat from the prequel films to create the series’ unique look and feel.
She believes taking the risk was a deliberate choice and maintains she doesn’t regret it. She argues the show’s difficulties stemmed from its attempt to be innovative. Furthermore, she emphasizes the designers’ contributions, stating that building the show’s world was more challenging than developing the plot.
Headland also noted the show wasn’t intended for all viewers. She felt letting the target audience discover it might have been a good approach for a new series experimenting with different ideas, but acknowledged the final decision wasn’t hers and respected it, even though she was disappointed.

She Frames the Backlash as a YouTuber-Driven Economy
Headland focused her criticism on online fan commentary, particularly on YouTube. She explained that she was familiar with many of the channels covering the show, having followed them even before she joined Lucasfilm. While she believes some creators are genuine, she accuses others of being dishonest and even expresses concern about extremist views present among some, labeling them as prejudiced and racist.
She doesn’t believe the show was a creative failure, but rather that it was exploited for financial gain online. She argues that the community of fans and critics has become a profitable system built around Star Wars, and that discussions about the franchise are now more influential than the franchise itself.
Headland believes the criticism wasn’t about the show’s quality, but motivated by money. She suggests creators criticized it because they saw it was attracting a large audience and wanted attention for themselves.

She Says Fans Didn’t Have Time to Find the Show
While Headland admits Disney canceled The Acolyte soon after its release, she doesn’t believe it was due to poor viewership. She argues that Star Wars series are compared to other Star Wars shows, not to all streaming content, making it difficult to accurately assess its performance.
She believes the show deserved a chance to build an audience, even though it had low Nielsen ratings – the lowest of any Star Wars series – and Disney canceled it quickly.
She acknowledges the show’s cancellation was due to both creative reasons and low ratings, but she was more taken aback by how quickly and openly the decision was announced, rather than the cancellation itself.

She Suggests Season 2 Was Already Taking Shape
According to Headland, she and the show’s creator began brainstorming ideas for the second season, with a particular focus on developing the character played by Manny Jacinto.
From the beginning, Lee Jung-jae was intended to be the heart of the first season, and the second season was designed to delve into different relationships and conflicts.
Honestly, going into this project, we didn’t have a super detailed plan. The director admitted they only had a few key moments they absolutely wanted to include, saying it was like knowing just a couple of landmarks on a long road trip.
There was no mention of Plagueis in the interview.
