I’m so thrilled with the opening weekend numbers! It’s amazing to think Leonardo DiCaprio has now had a number one movie debut in four different decades. That’s something very few actors ever accomplish, and it just proves what a consistent and incredible talent he is.
It all began with the 1997 film *Titanic*. Directed by James Cameron, it premiered on December 19th and rapidly became a cultural sensation.
The movie earned $8.65 million on its opening day and $28.6 million over the weekend from 2,674 theaters. It quickly became the top movie, beating out films like *Mouse Hunt* and *Scream 2*. It also broke the record for the biggest Christmas Day earnings at the time, bringing in $9.2 million.
In 2006, Leonardo DiCaprio starred in The Departed, a film directed by Martin Scorsese, which opened at number one in box offices. It earned a total of $132.4 million in the U.S. and Canada, and an additional $159 million worldwide.
The movie opened with $26.9 million and continued to perform well for weeks, becoming one of the year’s biggest hits.
In 2010, Leonardo DiCaprio appeared in the film *Inception*, which premiered in over 3,700 theaters across North America, with 195 of those being IMAX theaters. It earned $21.8 million on its first day, including late-night showings, and a total of $62.7 million during its opening weekend, making it the top-grossing movie at that time.
Box office numbers show this film had the second-best opening weekend of any original science fiction movie – meaning it wasn’t a sequel, remake, or based on existing material. Only James Cameron’s *Avatar* opened to a higher amount.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest film, *One Battle After Another*, proves he’s had an incredibly long and successful career in Hollywood. It’s clear that very few actors have consistently attracted audiences to theaters for four decades as he has.
Throughout his career, he’s proven he’s both talented and skilled at choosing movies that resonate with people all over the world.
