LEGO’s HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Toothless Set Makes for an Adorable Mini Night Fury

As a devoted fan of DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon“, I’ve been waiting with bated breath for the first LEGO set from the Isle of Berk ever since the movie series began fifteen years ago. With two sequels under our belt, you’d think that we would have had our hands on these beloved plastic bricks and characters by now. However, it was only this summer that the toy company finally released the “How to Train Your Dragon: Toothless” building set, marking the franchise’s very first LEGO collectible.

Waiting all this time for a buildable Night Fury was testing my patience, but once I got my hands on the set and started putting it together, every second of the wait seemed worth it. It turns out that Toothless, Hiccup’s loyal companion, is just as endearing up close as he is on the big screen, making him a perfect addition to any desk or shelf.

The 784-piece LEGO Icons “How to Train Your Dragon”: Toothless Construction Set comes with seven separate bags. As you progress, the construction generally becomes less complex. This set is designed to be built from the base up and from the inside out. Start by constructing Toothless’s internal structure, culminating in his large head and tail at the end.

Considering that the construction consists of less than 800 components, I assumed it would be quite straightforward, and indeed, time-wise, it took me approximately three and a half hours to complete. However, the project proved to be more difficult than anticipated due to an abundance of tiny pieces. Moreover, each section perfectly slots into the one before, resulting in some tight and tricky alignments. (As a side note, I’m a slow but determined LEGO enthusiast who doesn’t rush through building, but persists once I begin.)

It’s reassuring to find that the set is more robust than it appears while constructing it. Despite my initial concerns that some parts might break off, they never did. The instructions led me astray only a couple of times, with the most significant confusion occurring when I had to position Toothless’ eyes (try to place them as high up as possible).

In simpler terms, although Toothless from the kids’ movie is popular, his Lego set might not be suitable for young children due to its complexity. The recommended age is 18+, but it doesn’t mean that only adults can build it. A pre-teen who has some experience with more intricate Lego sets and can follow instructions could handle this collectible. The higher age recommendation gives you an idea of the level of skill required for building this particular set.

After constructing your Night Fury, it becomes an enjoyable toy for children to interact with. The LEGO Toothless figure has numerous movable pieces such as its tail, wings, jaw, ears, head which rotates and swivels, and a removable wagging tongue. As an added bonus, he comes equipped with exciting extras including plasma-blast effects and blue fish. These accessories can be placed inside his mouth according to your preferred display style.

My preferred figure in the LEGO set is Toothless, portrayed with a cheerful grin and his tongue lolling out. The design gives him an appearance of joy and eagerness to carry Hiccup. What sets this apart is how accurately LEGO has crafted Toothless’s smile. Even without his tongue, the bottom row of teeth resembles gums, explaining his name origin. All in all, it’s a beautifully designed, engaging LEGO set.

My main concern is that Toothless’ large head, given his small stature of just seven inches (which I found surprising), is too heavy to stay upright consistently. This problem, in turn, affects your viewing experience as it causes sightline issues if he’s positioned below your line of sight. For instance, placing him next to my laptop meant I missed out on enjoying many of his best features. While the top of his head may not be as charming as his big goofy smile, a better angle is necessary to truly appreciate this LEGO Night Fury set. Despite it being fitting for a dragon, you might struggle to find an ideal spot to display him.

Is the $69.99 price of the LEGO Toothless figure justified by all its features? This question might depend on whether you believe the relatively brief building time is worth that cost. Given how expensive other complex LEGO sets can be, I consider it an excellent starter collection for those wanting to enhance their LEGO-building abilities. For seasoned builders too, once assembled, it becomes a genuinely fantastic addition to any “How To Train Your Dragon” collection, serving as a nostalgic reminder of why the movies and their iconic Night Fury are beloved.

As a captivated LEGO enthusiast and self-proclaimed How to Train Your Dragon devotee, I must admit that the arrival of a LEGO set inspired by the enchanting Isle of Berk feels like a long-awaited reunion with an old friend. It’s hard to fathom how we managed without it for this long!
