Actor Russell Crowe has been confirmed as part of the cast for the upcoming Highlander remake, where he’ll share screen time with Henry Cavill. This information was shared by Collider. The movie, helmed by Chad Stahelski who is famous for his work on the John Wick franchise, has been in the making for almost a decade and is now progressing towards production starting this autumn.
Director Stahelski assured fans that the new Highlander isn’t just a rehash of the 1986 original. Rather, it will delve deeper into the tale, transitioning from the Scottish Highlands in the 1500s to contemporary urban settings such as New York and Hong Kong. He characterized the film as action-packed, hinting at a romantic subplot, but one that is not what you might expect.
The path taken by the reboot has been a winding one, filled with twists and turns. In 2008, Summit Entertainment secured the rights for Highlander. Since then, numerous screenwriters, directors, and actors have joined and subsequently departed from the project. Initially, Justin Lin was slated to direct, while Melissa Rosenberg penned the script. Famous personalities like Ryan Reynolds were rumored to play the lead role, but those arrangements didn’t materialize in the end.
Various directors, such as Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, were part of the project at various stages. There were whispers about actors like Vinnie Jones and Dave Bautista potentially taking on the villainous role of The Kurgan. However, none of these possibilities materialized. Eventually, in 2016, Chad Stahelski was officially announced as the director, and since then, the project has picked up significant pace.
By 2021, discussions had commenced regarding Henry Cavill’s involvement in the upcoming remake, and his part was unveiled two years afterward. More recently, it has been confirmed that Russell Crowe will join the cast, taking on the role of Ramirez, a significant character within the narrative.
By the end of 2023, it’s been confirmed that Lionsgate (who own Summit Entertainment) is progressing with a film project having an estimated budget surpassing $100 million. The director, Stahelski, will continue to lead the production, while Mike Finch pens the screenplay. Initial plans suggest shooting will commence in early 2024; however, recent speculation points towards Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber potentially handling distribution under the United Artists label instead.
The initial Highlander film, helmed by Russell Mulcahy, showcased Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod in the lead role. This movie gained notoriety due to its distinctive tale about immortal warriors clashing across centuries, thrilling sword fights, and an iconic soundtrack by Queen. Subsequent films, adaptations, and a TV series were produced, but none could rival the influence of the first movie.
As a movie buff, I’ve been eagerly following updates about this reboot, knowing full well that it intends to honor the original while broadening the universe in exciting new directions. With Chad Stahelski at the helm and heavy-hitters like Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe joining the cast, action aficionados can brace themselves for high-octane sequences and unexpected surprises!
