In a recent interview with IGN, director Stephen Cronin discussed his upcoming film, describing it as a mysterious and intriguing puzzle. He explained that he’s always been fascinated by Egyptian history and its hidden secrets, and wanted the movie to reflect that sense of uncovering something long buried. Cronin emphasized that this film isn’t simply a retelling of the classic mummy story, but rather an exploration of darker themes and a fresh perspective on familiar ideas.
Director Cronin described his film as a unique blend of two classics: Poltergeist and Seven, but with his own distinctive style and focus on entertaining audiences. Seven, released in 1995 and starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, is a crime thriller about detectives hunting a serial killer whose crimes are inspired by the seven deadly sins. Poltergeist, on the other hand, centers around supernatural forces that terrorize a family and kidnap their daughter from what seems like a perfect home.
How in the world do you marry those two movies together? Well, here’s the synopsis for The Mummy:
When a journalist’s young daughter vanishes in the desert, her family is devastated. Eight years later, their shock turns to horror as she mysteriously returns home, and what should be a happy reunion quickly becomes a terrifying ordeal.
We can kinda see what’s happening here. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy will hit theaters on April 17.
