Lea Michele is looking back at the painful experience of Cory Monteith‘s passing. They were a couple while starring together on Glee when he sadly passed away. Despite the devastation, Michele chose to carry on with the show, and now she’s sharing insights into what those challenging times entailed.
In the May 8th episode of the Therapuss podcast, Michele shared a chilling memory from her past. She resided in West Hollywood, a place where tour buses frequently passed by her home. The passengers would announce, “Lea Michele plays Rachel Berry on Glee,” followed by playing “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” This continued even after Monteith’s passing. As she put it, “It was unsettling. I was 26 and simply struggling to get by.
In the summer of 2013, I tragically lost my dear friend Cory Monteith due to a lethal combination of heroin and alcohol. He was only 31 years old. Despite this heartbreaking incident, the filming of Glee continued. At that time, Lea Michele, my close colleague, found herself navigating grief in the public spotlight. “It was overwhelmingly sad,” she confessed. “Yet, if we hadn’t shown up for work, nobody else could either.” She shared that she had to momentarily set aside her own sorrow to ensure the show’s production.
Michelle expressed that Monteith’s passing significantly impacted the dynamics on set, and for her personally, it was extremely challenging. “It felt like a crack had appeared,” she stated. “I can’t say how everyone else felt, but for me, it was tough.” She dedicated herself entirely to her work during this time. “I was simply trying to survive,” she said. “Just focusing on getting my job done.
Regardless of her discomfort, Michele expressed that she felt encouraged, particularly by the Glee team. “They assisted me in overcoming my struggles,” she disclosed. “I’d gaze at the individual behind the camera, and they were providing me strength.” She has since remembered Monteith’s legacy.
At the age of 38, Michelle has discovered tranquility. She tied the knot with Zandy Reich and is now a mother of two. Yet, the memory of Monteith continues to be deeply meaningful for her.
