The eagerly awaited anime titled “Lazarus” promises to be a series not to be missed. It’s helmed by Shinichiro Watanabe, the genius behind the popular shows “Cowboy Bebop” and “Samurai Champloo”.
The animated series, produced by MAPPA (known for shows like “Chainsaw Man” and “Attack on Titan”), is set to air on Japanese television in April, specifically on TV Tokyo and other stations. As of now, there’s no confirmed date for its release on Toonami, but it’s creating a lot of excitement and is anticipated to premiere later this year.
The latest teaser visual shows off five characters, all in striking blue tones:
This upcoming anime boasts a stellar lineup of voice actors, such as Mamoru Miyano from “Death Note”, Maaya Uchida known for her work in “Reincarnated as a Slime”, Akio Ōtsuka famed for his role in “Ghost in the Shell”, and Megumi Hayashibara recognized for her performance in “Evangelion”. To make things even more thrilling, jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington is creating the music, collaborating with artists Floating Points and Bonobo.
Here’s the story:
2052 marks an exceptional period of tranquility and wealth worldwide, as humanity has conquered illness and suffering. This remarkable transformation is due to the invention of a miraculous drug called Hapuna by Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner, with no discernible downsides. Rapidly, Hapuna becomes widespread and indispensable. Yet, shortly after its official launch, Dr. Skinner mysteriously disappears.
Three years on, the globe has advanced, yet Dr. Skinner reappears, forebodingly. He reveals that Hapuna possesses a limited lifespan. Those who consumed it will meet their end approximately three years hence. Death approaches this corrupt world – swiftly.
To counter this imminent danger, a select team of five operatives are assembled globally with the mission to prevent Skinner’s scheme from endangering humanity. They go by the name “Lazarus.” Will they locate Skinner in time and create a vaccine before the clock ticks down?
1) Watanabe doesn’t merely oversee the direction; instead, he personally guides each episode. Notably, Chad Stahelski, famous for his work on John Wick, manages the action sequences, guaranteeing a pulse-pounding experience throughout the series.
In the background, we have Akemi Hayashi working on character design, Stanislas Brunet focusing on concept design, and Miho Sugiura taking care of art direction.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but be thrilled about the stunning soundtrack of the upcoming sci-fi epic, “Lazarus.” The opening theme, ‘Vortex,’ masterfully crafted by Kamasi Washington, and the closing track, ‘Lazarus,’ skillfully delivered by The Boo Radleys, promise to add an extra layer of excitement to this action-packed journey. With such a talented crew working on it, “Lazarus” is shaping up to be a mind-blowing experience this spring.
