Laurence Fishburne had a successful acting career before landing the role of Morpheus in The Matrix. He’d already earned an Academy Award nomination for What’s Love Got to Do With It and appeared in films like Boyz n the Hood and Apocalypse Now – he was only 14 when he made that one! However, it was Morpheus that cemented his status as a science fiction icon. Recently, Fishburne shared that filming The Matrix was physically painful throughout the entire process. He explained his experiences to Variety at the Marrakech Film Festival, saying:
As far as I know, we were among the first Western actors to really try the Hong Kong action style, and Yuen Woo-ping, the amazing fight choreographer, was worried we wouldn’t be able to handle it. He put us through incredibly intense training – honestly, he trained us like Olympic athletes! It was during that training that it hit me why professional athletes earn so much money. It’s not just occasional soreness after a workout; they’re always in pain, constantly pushing through it.
Laurence Fishburne and the other actors in The Matrix were pioneers, helping to create a fresh style of action filmmaking – something new for American movies at the time. Despite the physical challenges, the risk was well worth it, and Fishburne was clearly willing to endure the soreness to reprise his role as Morpheus in the sequels. A pay increase probably didn’t hurt either.
Laurence Fishburne says the intense training for his role decades ago still feels natural to his body. He recalls having two trainers who pushed them incredibly hard! Some fans speculate this demanding experience might be why he didn’t pursue the role of Luke Cage for Marvel. It’s easy to see why – after all that, he’d probably prefer to avoid hanging from wires again!
