Molly Watts shared a moving story about James Ransone, the actor who recently passed away at 46. She recounted how he bravely intervened and saved her from a sl assault when they were neighbors in Chinatown.
Naomi Watts shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, writing that she’s incredibly grateful for a certain man and wonders if her life would be the same without him. She typically keeps things private but felt compelled to express her gratitude publicly.
It was awful hearing her describe what happened. She said she was attacked right as she was walking up to our building. She started screaming for help, but nobody came. Then, she said the attacker grabbed her throat to shut her up, and she couldn’t breathe. She genuinely thought she was going to die, or be seriously hurt, as she was being choked and lost consciousness. It was just a really harrowing story to listen to.
Watts shared that a man she knew as PJ came to her rescue. She said he heard her screaming and rushed to help, running without a shirt and carrying either a bat or a pipe – she didn’t get a clear look. His arrival scared off her attacker, and PJ chased after him, leading police to the building where he escaped. This chase allowed the police to identify the attacker as a known sex offender. Watts believes PJ saved her life and that things would be very different if he hadn’t intervened.

She also thought about how Ransone’s difficult experiences affected him. She said, “Even now, as an adult, I’m not sure I could have coped with the possibility of what happened, or how long it would take to recover—I was already feeling vulnerable. It’s particularly painful to me that PJ lived with that kind of trauma.”
I feel like PJ carried the weight of something terrible that happened to him when he was young – at an age when kids don’t have the tools to cope with trauma, and are still figuring out who they are. It seems like whatever he went through really stayed with him. It’s just… this world isn’t kind to people who are struggling or showing their pain.
Actor Ransone was recognizable for his work as Ziggy Sobotka in The Wire and as the adult version of Eddy Kaspbrak in It: Chapter Two. He recently appeared in projects like Black Phone 2, V/H/S/85, Small Engine Repair, What We Found, Poker Face, Seal Team, 50 States of Fright, and The First.
Watts explained that she’d often considered contacting him to thank him. “I wanted him to know how thankful I was that he ran towards my cries for help, but I never did, and I regret it now,” she said. She also shared a link to a GoFundMe campaign to support Ransone’s family.
