Many actors have quiet career endings, but others leave behind a final film that becomes known after their passing. This collection highlights the last movies made by some iconic actors before they died, detailing their roles and when the films were released. Several of these movies came out after the actors’ deaths, and a few required the use of body doubles or older footage to complete. Regardless, these films represent the final works of truly remarkable careers.
James Dean
James Dean starred in three films, all released between 1955 and 1956. ‘East of Eden’ and ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ both came out in 1955, and his final movie, ‘Giant’, was released in 1956. He finished filming his role in ‘Giant’ just before he tragically died in September 1955, and he was nominated for a Best Actor award after his death.
Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe’s last finished movie was ‘The Misfits,’ released in 1961. She played the character Roslyn Taber alongside Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift. Although she started filming ‘Something’s Got to Give’ in 1962, it remained unfinished. Sadly, Monroe passed away in August 1962, making ‘The Misfits’ her last completed film.
Bruce Lee
As a huge Bruce Lee fan, it’s always been important to me to remember his complete works. While ‘Game of Death’ came out later, it was sadly put together after he passed away using other actors and old clips. That’s why, for me, ‘Enter the Dragon’ – released in 1973 – is truly his last finished film, the one where we get to see him at his best, completely himself. He actually finished making it just before he died, which makes it even more special.
Brandon Lee
Brandon Lee tragically died during the filming of his last movie, ‘The Crow,’ in March 1993. Despite his death, the film was completed using special effects and a stand-in, and was released in May 1994 as a tribute to him.
Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger’s last movie role was in ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,’ which was released in 2009. Sadly, he passed away in January 2008 while filming it. To finish the movie, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell each stepped in to play the same character in different forms. Before his death, Ledger completed ‘The Dark Knight,’ which came out in 2008 and was his last fully finished film.
Paul Walker
Paul Walker tragically passed away in November 2013, but his last movie, ‘Furious 7’, was released in 2015. To complete the film after his death, filmmakers used visual effects and footage of his brothers to finish his remaining scenes. The movie also features a touching tribute to Walker.
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final film appearance was in ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2,’ which was released in 2015. He passed away in February 2014, having already filmed the majority of both ‘Mockingjay’ movies. The filmmakers made some changes to the films to work around the scenes he wasn’t able to complete. While ‘Mockingjay – Part 2’ was released after his death, his last starring role released during his lifetime was ‘A Most Wanted Man’ in 2014.
Robin Williams
Robin Williams completed several projects before his death in August 2014, and some were released afterward. These included both voice work and on-screen performances. His last full movie role was in ‘Boulevard,’ which came out in 2014. He also provided the voice for Dennis the Dog in ‘Absolutely Anything,’ released in 2015, and appeared in ‘Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,’ also in 2014.
Carrie Fisher
Carrie Fisher’s last role as Princess Leia was in the 2019 film ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.’ Although she passed away in December 2016, the filmmakers were able to include her in the movie using footage she’d filmed in 2015. She also appeared in the 2016 documentary ‘Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds’ after her death.
Chadwick Boseman
Chadwick Boseman’s last movie was ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,’ which came out in 2020. He finished filming his role as Levee before sadly passing away in August of that year. The movie was released on a streaming service in December and earned him many awards and nominations after his death.
River Phoenix
River Phoenix’s final movie to be shown in theaters while he was alive was ‘The Thing Called Love,’ which came out in 1993. He tragically passed away in October of that same year while filming ‘Dark Blood.’ Although ‘Dark Blood’ wasn’t finished at the time, it was eventually completed and released in 2012. So, while his last work as an actor was on the set of ‘Dark Blood’, ‘The Thing Called Love’ was the last movie he saw released.
John Candy
John Candy sadly passed away in March 1994 while working on the movie ‘Wagons East’, which became his last on-set project. The film was released later that year. ‘Canadian Bacon’, filmed before ‘Wagons East’, came out in 1995, marking another of his final performances. These two movies are remembered as the last films he appeared in.
James Gandolfini
James Gandolfini’s last movie, ‘The Drop,’ came out in 2014. He finished filming his role as bar owner Cousin Marv before he passed away in June 2013. The film first shown at film festivals in 2014 and was then released to a wider audience. He also starred in ‘Enough Said’ that same year, 2013.
Peter Sellers
Peter Sellers’ final movie was ‘The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu,’ which came out in 1980. Sadly, he passed away in July of that year, not long after finishing the film. He played two characters in the movie, making it his last ever performance on screen.
John Belushi
John Belushi’s last movie role was in the 1981 film ‘Neighbors.’ He sadly passed away in March 1982. The movie was a dark comedy that reunited him with Dan Aykroyd, but this time they played characters opposite to their typical roles. Sadly, he didn’t have the chance to work on any other films before his death.
Peter O’Toole
As a movie fan, it’s always a little sad learning about an actor’s final roles. Peter O’Toole’s last film appearance was in ‘Katherine of Alexandria’ – sometimes called ‘Decline of an Empire’ – which came out in 2014. He sadly passed away in December 2013, but thankfully, he finished filming before then. I also remember seeing him in ‘For Greater Glory’ just a year earlier, in 2012 – he really was a fantastic actor right up until the end.
Alan Rickman
Alan Rickman’s last film roles were in ‘Eye in the Sky’ and as the voice of the Blue Caterpillar in ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’, both released in 2016. He sadly passed away in January 2016, but had already finished working on both projects.
Gene Wilder
Gene Wilder’s final movie role was in ‘Another You,’ which came out in 1991. He passed away in 2016 after taking a break from filmmaking, and during that time, he worked on television and writing projects. He never appeared in another theatrical film after 1991.
Sean Connery
Sean Connery’s last movie appearance was in ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ in 2003. He passed away in 2020. Following that film, he stopped acting in movies and television. He did provide voice-over work for a short animated film in 2012, connected to a video game, but didn’t appear in any other films.
Leonard Nimoy
Leonard Nimoy’s final film appearance was in ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ in 2013. He passed away in 2015. In the movie, he played Spock Prime during key moments of the story. Even as his health declined, he continued to do voice acting work.
Patrick Swayze
Patrick Swayze’s final movie, ‘Powder Blue,’ came out in 2009, just before his death in September of that same year. In the film, he played the owner of a strip club. He also appeared in the TV series ‘The Beast’ in 2009, which was his last television role.
Brittany Murphy
Brittany Murphy died in December 2009, and several of her finished films were released around that time. While she had roles in ‘Deadline’ (2009) and did voice work for other projects, ‘Abandoned,’ which came out in 2010, is generally considered her final movie.
Christopher Plummer
Christopher Plummer’s last film role while he was alive was in ‘The Last Full Measure,’ which came out in 2020. He passed away in 2021, but continued to be heard in voice acting roles released after his death. One of his notable later performances was in the 2017 film ‘All the Money in the World.’
Christopher Lee
Christopher Lee’s final prominent film role was as Saruman in ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,’ released in 2014. Though he passed away in 2015, additional narration and voice work he completed continued to be released. His career in film and television lasted from the late 1940s until the mid-2010s.
Anton Yelchin
Anton Yelchin finished working on several films just before he tragically passed away in June 2016. ‘Star Trek Beyond,’ featuring his performance as Pavel Chekov, came out the following month. The thriller ‘Thoroughbreds,’ filmed in 2015, premiered in 2017. Additionally, audiences enjoyed several documentaries and voice acting projects released after his death.
Orson Welles
As a movie buff, it always fascinates me to learn about the final works of great artists. It’s kind of sad, but cool, that Orson Welles’ last role in a feature film was actually voicing Unicron in ‘Transformers: The Movie’! He finished recording his lines just before he passed away, and the animated film came out afterward. He had a bunch of other projects he was working on that never quite got finished during his lifetime, but this role is often remembered as his last truly completed performance for the big screen.
Bela Lugosi
Bela Lugosi’s final film appearance is in ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’. Director Ed Wood creatively finished the movie after Lugosi’s death by using previously filmed footage and stand-ins. Although he didn’t shoot any new scenes for the film, the preserved footage still captured Lugosi’s iconic look from his Dracula days.
Burt Reynolds
Burt Reynolds’ final film role was as Vic Edwards in ‘The Last Movie Star’. Although he began rehearsing for another movie, he didn’t finish that project. ‘The Last Movie Star’ was released while he was still alive and became a significant part of remembering his life and work, featuring clips from his earlier films.
Bill Paxton
Bill Paxton’s last movie released in theaters was ‘The Circle’. He had finished filming his role as the main character’s father before he passed away, and the film included his scenes with a tribute to him. He also appeared in ‘Mean Dreams’ around the same time, which had already premiered at film festivals.
Harry Dean Stanton
Harry Dean Stanton’s final starring role was in the film ‘Lucky’. He finished filming and did some initial promotion before his death, and the performance was seen as a perfect representation of the characters he often played later in his career. He also made a brief appearance in ‘The Old Man & the Gun’, which was released after he passed away.
Dennis Hopper
As a movie fan, it’s always a little sad learning about an actor’s final projects. With Dennis Hopper, one of his last roles was actually voicing a villain in the animated film ‘Alpha and Omega,’ which came out right around the time he passed away. He’d also completed an independent comedy that sat on the shelf for years before finally being released. They even listed him in the closing credits as part of the main cast, which was a nice touch. Sadly, his health was failing around then, so that period marked the end of his work in film and television.
Burt Lancaster
I’ll always remember Burt Lancaster’s last movie role in ‘Field of Dreams.’ He played Archibald ‘Moonlight’ Graham, and even though it wasn’t a leading part, his character felt so integral to the story’s magic. It’s a little sad knowing that marked his final time appearing in a theatrical film; he mostly worked on television after that, and eventually retired from acting altogether. It’s a beautiful way to remember such a legendary actor, though – a small but memorable part in a truly special movie.
Kirk Douglas
Kirk Douglas’ final film role was in ‘Illusion,’ an independent production that received a limited release. He’d significantly reduced his work due to health issues, and his later appearances were mostly comprised of archival footage or honorary acknowledgements, rather than new performances.
Sidney Poitier
Sidney Poitier’s last movie role was in ‘The Jackal’, where he played a former intelligence agent after a long hiatus from acting. Following this, he retired from film to pursue writing and work in diplomacy. He continued to make appearances on television and receive awards, but he never acted in another movie.
Betty White
Betty White’s final movie role was voicing Grammy Norma in ‘The Lorax,’ and she last appeared in a live-action film called ‘You Again.’ Even after those films, she remained a consistent presence on television and in special appearances, and continued to do voice work that kept her connected with family-friendly entertainment.
Albert Finney
Albert Finney’s last acting role was as Kincade, the groundskeeper in the James Bond film ‘Skyfall’. He had mostly stopped acting by that point, and returned to the screen specifically for this part. ‘Skyfall’ proved to be his final involvement with a large-scale film series, and he didn’t appear in any other movies afterward.
Max von Sydow
Max von Sydow’s final film, ‘Echoes of the Past,’ came out after he passed away. He’d previously finished filming a part in ‘The Painted Bird,’ which premiered earlier. These films marked the end of a remarkable career that spanned both artistic European cinema and major international blockbusters. Because of film festivals and varying release dates, audiences encountered his last performances at different times.
Elizabeth Taylor
Elizabeth Taylor’s last movie role was as Pearl Slaghoople in ‘The Flintstones.’ After that, she focused on made-for-TV movies and charitable work. Her later acting appearances were mostly guest roles and specials, and health problems led to a long period away from filmmaking.
Omar Sharif
Omar Sharif’s final significant film role was as a mentor in ‘The Physician’. He also made a brief appearance in a science education video shortly before he passed away. In the later part of his career, he focused on projects that didn’t require long filming commitments, often participating in international collaborations.
Peter Falk
Peter Falk’s last movie role was in the film ‘Next’, where he played a supporting character as the protagonist’s father. Following the film, his health worsened and he rarely appeared in public. ‘Next’ remains his final performance in a career filled with memorable roles.
