The first trailer for HBO Max’s Lanterns series grounds the typically space-faring Green Lantern universe in a more realistic setting. It focuses on Earth and doesn’t show much of the usual alien life or glowing green energy. The iconic power ring only appears briefly. The trailer builds to a surprising reveal: a conversation between John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). Jordan explains that he’s the only human Green Lantern, the others are aliens – and one of them is a talking squirrel! This isn’t just a joke; Ch’p, the squirrel Lantern, is a well-known character from the Green Lantern comics, appearing since the 1980s.
Ch’p first appeared in a Green Lantern comic book in 1982. He was created by writer Paul Kupperberg, known for his work on Doom Patrol, and artist Don Newton, who also worked on Shazam! In the DC Comics universe, the Green Lantern Corps is a huge police force that covers 3,600 sectors of space, with usually one or two Lanterns assigned to each sector. Earth’s sector, 2814, is an exception and has multiple Lanterns. Ch’p comes from Sector 1014, where the inhabitants of the planet H’Lven are intelligent, squirrel-like creatures. When the original Green Lantern for that sector died, his power ring went to Ch’p, a brave warrior who was then trained on the planet Oa by Green Lantern Killowog.

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline, Ch’p moved to Earth and teamed up with other Green Lanterns in California. Later, when John Stewart began caring for the alien world Mosaic – which consisted of many planets – Ch’p went with him. Unfortunately, DC Comics unexpectedly killed off Ch’p when he was run over by a yellow truck, a rather unheroic end. He briefly came back to life during the Blackest Night event, but died again, this time killed by his former teammate, Guy Gardner – quite a shameful fate! The Green Lantern who took over after Ch’p is B’dg, who’s just as cute, and is thankfully still alive and well – so far, no trucks have gotten to him.

Even though DC Comics killed off the character Ch’p in the early 1990s, he’s still a beloved Green Lantern among fans. He’s made appearances in various animated shows, and was even voiced by Diego Luna in the League of Super Pets movie. There was a popular fan theory that the squirrel Superman saved during a monster attack was actually Ch’p, but it turned out to be just a regular squirrel. However, the character is now officially part of the DC Universe. While the upcoming Lanterns series seems too serious for a talking squirrel, James Gunn has a history of making alien creatures resembling cute animals popular – just look at Rocket Raccoon. So, it wouldn’t be shocking if Ch’p shows up in Man of Tomorrow!
