The upcoming HBO series titled “Lanterns” has already chosen its main characters for the Green Lantern roles, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre taking on those parts respectively. There’s also speculation that Nathan Fillion will appear as Guy Gardner in a guest role, as he is set to play this character in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman”. However, the big question is about Sinestro, a key villain in Green Lantern lore. Despite James Gunn describing “Lanterns” as more Earth-focused than cosmic, it will reportedly include the alien antagonist Sinestro. According to Deadline, we now know that Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen, recognized for his work on Cinemax’s “Banshee”, will portray Sinestro in this series. Previously, Mark Strong played Sinestro in the 2011 “Green Lantern” film, but it seems times are changing.
Thaal Sinestro debuted in issue #7 of Green Lantern, all the way back in 1961. Initially portrayed as a former Green Lantern who morphed into a ruthless dictator on his home planet Korugar, the Guardians of the Universe took away his green power ring from him due to his misconduct. He then created another ring, fueled by yellow energy instead. Sinestro frequently clashed with Green Lantern Hal Jordan in the comics, serving as Jordan’s main adversary. In the Super Friends cartoon, Sinestro became a member of the Legion of Doom. In today’s DC Comics era, his fame skyrocketed when he established the Yellow Lantern Corps, which draws its power from fear. The Sinestro Corps saga in the 2000s remains one of the most beloved Green Lantern stories to date.
The upcoming series titled “Lanterns” will be the first fresh HBO show set within the DC Universe, arriving after season two of “Peacemaker.” Expected to premiere in 2026, around the same time as “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” hits theaters, this new series will bring Ulrich Thomsen’s Sinestro into the DCU. The question remains which other extraterrestrial characters might join the “Lanterns” cast, with possibilities such as the alien Green Lantern Kilowog and Katma Tui, Sinestro’s successor on Korugar who later marries John Stewart. We eagerly await further announcements regarding additional characters in this series, scheduled for a late 2026 debut on HBO and Max.
