Although set on Earth, the forthcoming HBO series ‘Lanterns’, drawing from DC’s Green Lantern lore, boasts a number of extraterrestrial characters among its cast. As reported by Deadline, Paul Ben-Victor from The Wire has recently joined the series. In addition to Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, here’s his character description that suggests he might be portraying Atrocitus.
Ben-Victor takes on the role of Antaan, an alien with an unwavering commitment to revealing truth and seeking retribution against those who harmed his kind. Driven by a fierce, relentless anger towards the law, he is resolute in meting out justice according to his own standards.
In contrast to the Green Lantern comics, there’s no character named Antaan. Instead, they feature a significant character called Atros, an alias for Atrocitus, who is a key member of the Red Lantern Corps. This character was brought to life during Geoff Johns’ impressive tenure on the Green Lantern series. Originating from the planet Ryut, Atrocitus has a fascinating backstory: when the Manhunters, precursors to the Green Lanterns, annihilated all life in his galaxy sector apart from himself and a select few, he harbored resentment towards their creators, the Guardians of the Universe. Seeking vengeance, he tapped into the red energy of the emotional spectrum, which is driven by rage. This energy source enabled him to establish the Red Lantern Corps, a group of beings who wield rings imbued with hatred.
The Antaan character strongly resembles Atrocitus to us, although his name might have been altered for the live-action version to something less obvious. In the comics, Atros is his true identity. This modification excites DC fans because it suggests that we’ll encounter a variety of colored Lanterns in this series beyond just the green ones. We may even see characters like Larfleeze, the greedy Orange Lantern, or the hope-driven Blue Lanterns. The Lanterns universe holds much unrealized potential. This series, executive produced by Damon Lindelof of ‘Watchmen’ and Tom King of ‘Batman’, is due on HBO in 2026.
