Kunal Nayyar Reveals How He ‘Pissed Everyone Off’ on Big Bang Theory Set and Made Co-Stars’ Lives Difficult

Kunal Nayyar, known for his role as Raj Koothrappali on The Big Bang Theory, has shared stories about how he used to drive his fellow cast members up the wall. Moreover, Nayyar mentioned that he seldom goes back and watches the series.

Nayyar’s renowned mid-2000s sitcom stars Jim Parsons playing Sheldon Cooper, Kaley Cuoco portraying Penny, Johnny Galecki in the role of Leonard Hofstadter, Simon Helberg as Howard Wolowitz, Mayim Bialik acting as Amy Farrah Fowler, and Melissa Rauch depicting Bernadette Rostenkowski Wolowitz.

A British actor openly shared an annoying backstage quirk that his fellow actors weren’t fond of. He admitted that his constant laughing on set frequently interrupted filming, especially during the early seasons of the series.

During a conversation on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast, 44-year-old Nayyar confessed that he had earned a reputation for losing his character while filming. He candidly admitted, “It used to frustrate everyone, but I just couldn’t help it.” In the early stages of the show, he was particularly notorious for breaking character during scenes.

Nayyar explained that it proved challenging for him to keep a straight face during comic scenes because he would often laugh, even at his own jokes. This habit reportedly irritated every other cast member, particularly when working alongside Helberg’s character, the aerospace engineer. One aspect that made things difficult for Nayyar was acting opposite Helberg.

Nayyar stated that he often finds himself laughing at his own jokes, which is amusing. After all, how could one not when dealing with Simon’s exceptional comic delivery? It was nearly impossible to maintain composure due to Helberg’s impeccable comedic timing.

Nayyar strengthened his argument by highlighting Simon’s charm as both an actor and a performer, causing even a mundane line like “Friday works for me” to provoke laughter from him. Helberg had a special talent for elevating ordinary dialogues through his portrayal.

Despite The Big Bang Theory, which debuted in 2007 and ran for 12 successful seasons on CBS, maintaining its status as a cultural touchstone, watched by various age groups, Kunal Nayyar admitted that he rarely revisits the show. However, he finds comfort in occasionally having it playing in the background.
