Like many people during lockdown, my wife and I stumbled upon the British comedy show Taskmaster on YouTube when we were looking for something to distract us from all the uncertainty. The show is wonderfully chaotic – each season, five comedians compete in ridiculous challenges judged by Greg Davies (the Taskmaster) and organized by Alex Horne, the show’s creator. We’ve been watching it ever since, and it keeps getting funnier! For its 21st season, Taskmaster is adding Kumail Nanjiani to the lineup.
Check out the series 21 announce video below.
Kumail Nanjiani is the second U.S.-based comedian to compete on Taskmaster. Jason Mantzoukas was on in series 19, and Desiree Burch appeared in series 12, though she’s based in the UK, making Nanjiani the first contestant I’ve actually met! It’s a fun fact.
Joining Kumail Nanjiani are award-winning comedian Amy Gledhill, acclaimed writer and director Armando Iannucci (known for shows like The Thick of It and Veep), actress and presenter Joanna Page (famous for a memorable scene in Love Actually), and comedian Joel Dommett.
If you haven’t discovered Taskmaster yet, I truly believe it’s one of the most enjoyable shows on television. You can find all the older seasons on the show’s official YouTube channel – it’s a fantastic source of comedy! The show has featured incredibly talented comedians, including Aisling Bea, James Acaster, Noel Fielding, Rose Matafeo, Mae Martin, Sam Campbell, Steve Pemberton, and Reece Shearsmith, among many others. I could name everyone who’s been on it, but that would take a long time! It’s simply brilliant, and it’s helped me discover a lot of new comedians and performers that I now love.
The new series of Taskmaster, series 21, will be on TV before too long. They typically release a series in the spring and another in the autumn, so we can expect it soon.
