Kristin Davis Reveals ‘Sex & The City’ Cast Feared Nudity: “Would We Be Shunned?”

20 years after Sex and the City ended its acclaimed six-season broadcast, there has been a significant transformation in the entertainment world regarding on-screen nudity. Kristin Davis recently discussed the anxieties she and her fellow cast members experienced while filming intimate scenes, acknowledging that they were “afraid” to show too much and worried about potential backlash affecting their careers.

Davis on Early Fears of Nudity

On her “Are You a Charlotte?” podcast, Davis reminisced about the stark contrast between Hollywood during the time when Sex and the City aired from 1998 to 2004, and today’s fashion trends. Back then, there was apprehension about showing nipples on the show, with concerns like “Oh my god, they want us to show our nipples.” They fretted over potential backlash, fearing they might be ostracized or rejected by the film industry if they did so. In stark contrast, today’s red carpet events are filled with dresses that reveal skin, a trend that was unthinkable during those years.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s No-Nudity Stance

Davis’ remarks mirror the views expressed earlier by her castmate Sarah Jessica Parker, who portrayed Carrie Bradshaw in the series. In an interview conducted in 2023, Parker disclosed that she had established limits regarding nudity prior to joining the show. “The one thing I expressed concern about to [creator Darren Star] was that I simply didn’t feel at ease with nudity,” she recounted on The Howard Stern Show. To her satisfaction, Star made it clear that nudity would be optional: “He said, ‘If you don’t want to do it, then don’t. It doesn’t matter to me.’ This decision allowed Parker to feel more comfortable throughout the show’s run.

Revisiting the Role in ‘And Just Like That’

As a loyal follower, I’ve faced hurdles and worries initially, but over the years, I’ve grown deeply connected with my characters, revisiting them not just in two Sex and the City films, but also in the more recent And Just Like That revival on Max. Come 2025, I’m excited to step back into the shoes of Charlotte York once again for the show’s third season.

Initially, the Sex and the City cast grappled with the impact of on-screen nudity, but the entertainment industry has undergone a remarkable transformation since then. As traditions in the industry adapt and viewers’ tastes evolve, Davis’ musings underscore how much Hollywood has progressed over time. In the upcoming series And Just Like That, viewers will witness how the characters, along with their real-life counterparts, grapple with a world that bears little resemblance to the one portrayed when Sex and the City first aired.
