As a lifelong fan of musical theater and a devotee of the magical world of Oz, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and admiration for the incredible bond between Kristin Chenoweth and Ariana Grande, two powerhouse talents who have graced the role of Glinda. Having grown up watching Chenoweth’s enchanting performance as Glinda on Broadway, it was a momentous occasion to witness Grande bring her own unique charm to the character in the film adaptation of Wicked.
Wicked, the sensational adaptation of the popular Broadway musical (based on Gregory Maguire’s novel), is sweeping the globe and has become a defining cultural event. Currently, it holds the title as the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in the domestic box office. Cynthia Erivo delivers an exceptional performance as Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch, while Ariana Grande steals the spotlight as Glinda. We affectionately refer to her as “The Witch Formerly Known as Glinda.” Kristin Chenoweth, the original Glinda on Broadway, shared valuable insights with Grande during filming.
As I donned the magical shoes once worn by the extraordinary Kristin Chenoweth in the role of Glinda, I felt a wave of excitement and respect. During the movie production, she graciously presented me with a unique jacket, mirroring one she owned. Both jackets depicted us as witches on the Yellow Brick Road, complete with bubbles and rainbows. Chenoweth herself posted photos of us in our pink, witchy outfits on Instagram – just scroll up to check them out!
In a recent post, Chenoweth shared: “Guiding my little girl on the yellow brick road. I surprised Ariana Grande with these jackets on the set of ‘Wicked.’ A small physical keepsake of our ‘passing of the wand’ adventure. I’ll guide you down any path you allow me, Ari. I am so incredibly proud of you, my dear.” The jackets were beautifully designed by Janan Studio and bedazzled by Haus of Crystals, ensuring the distinction between the two Glindas. In the play, Chenoweth dons a blue dress, while in the movie, Ariana Grande wears pink as a tribute to Billie Burke’s character, Glinda, in ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ Snapshots of the pair in their matching jackets are heartwarming, and we can’t help but wish they were available for purchase.
