At the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, Kristen Stewart’s first directorial venture, titled “The Chronology of Water“, received a heartfelt and moving reception during its premiere on Friday evening. This film was honored with a four-and-a-half-minute standing ovation at the Palais des Festivals.
Stewart, clearly touched by the response, returned the affection of her cast with warm hugs and energetic slaps on the back as the crowd cheered. Additionally, she made her way across the auditorium to offer a sincere embrace to Thierry Frémaux, the director at Cannes.
Speaking to everyone present, she expressed, “I have no more words; I poured my heart out on that screen. Thank you for joining us. Honestly, we just wrapped up the film a few minutes ago — it’s not even over yet. We truly hit the jackpot, and I am incredibly thankful to be here with you all.
After inviting me, the captivating lead actress Imogen Poots, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Indeed, your performance was the heart of the film, it felt like it belonged to me.” To which she graciously replied, “I am honored to be directed by such a talented individual, and I hope everyone enjoyed the movie as much as I enjoyed making it.
The movie titled “The Chronology of Water,” inspired by Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, was jointly penned by Stewart Mingo and Andy Mingo. This production was undertaken by Scott Free Productions, with Ridley Scott being one of the producers. Over a span of six weeks, it was filmed in Latvia and Malta. In addition to Poots, the cast includes Thora Birch, Earl Cave, Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth, and Jim Belushi.
Prior to the showing, Stewart presented the film at the Debussy Theatre, describing it as “an audacious expression of love.” She expressed gratitude towards Yuknavitch for the source material, saying, “Lydia, thank you for your writing that fearlessly challenges convention. Thank you for your drips and torrents. Thank you for everything. Now, let’s tear off this Band-Aid and experience the movie together!
