She recently purchased the Highland Theatre, which originally opened in 1925 as a venue for both live performances and films. After closing its doors in 2024, Stewart plans to renovate and revive the beloved building.

Martha Stewart shared with Architectural Digest that she hadn’t realized she wanted a home theater until she came across this particular space. She described feeling an immediate sense of urgency – like a starting pistol had fired – as soon as she learned about it. Stewart has a long-standing fascination with historic, rundown theaters and the mysteries they hold.

Stewart envisions the Highland as a community hub for creativity and connection, not just a movie theater. She wants it to be a place where locals can gather, share ideas, and experience film in a more personal way, offering an alternative to large, corporate cinema chains. It’s about building a space for everyone, not just film buffs.

The building needs significant repairs, but Stewart intends to restore it while preserving its classic Hollywood glamour and incorporating features the local community will enjoy. She’s confident she can revitalize the building in a way that honors its past.

Stewart, a lifelong resident of the San Fernando Valley, loves the feeling of Los Angeles as a collection of distinct neighborhoods. She appreciates the city’s spaciousness and believes that despite its reputation, LA has a thriving arts and culture scene.

She loves her city, but she’s deeply concerned about the growing number of people experiencing homelessness. She actively volunteers with the Downtown Women’s Center, assisting women living on Skid Row. She believes Los Angeles isn’t doing enough to address the problem and wants to use her platform to advocate for those who are struggling.

Stewart believes the movie industry and cities need to evolve. She argues that simply repeating old patterns isn’t enough and that the industry should focus on supporting communities. She emphasizes that filmmaking is inherently a form of expression and requires conscious choices about how to use that power.

Homelessness is a significant problem in Los Angeles, and actress Kristen Stewart is deeply committed to finding solutions. Currently, around 75,000 people in Los Angeles County are experiencing homelessness. Notably, Black residents are disproportionately affected, representing 31% of the homeless population despite making up only 9% of the county’s overall population. Stewart is leveraging her new theater and public platform to help address this issue in her community.
