It’s not uncommon to find female pop stars leading double lives as superheroes; characters like Marvel’s Dazzler and Jem and the Holograms from the ’80s come to mind. Now, in this century, we have a modern take on this concept, which is the upcoming Netflix animated movie KPop Demon Hunters. As the title hints, it revolves around a famous K-pop girl group, similar to Blackpink, who secretly fight against demonic forces. When Kpop sensations Rumi, Mira, and Zoey aren’t filling stadiums with adoring fans, they secretly fight as powerful demon hunters to shield their supporters from a persistent supernatural danger. Now, they need to confront their toughest adversary yet – a formidable boy band of demons disguised as rivals.
One intriguing aspect of this idea is that demons manifest in our world as popular KPop boy bands, which indeed fits quite well with our expectations. It’s not surprising if you’ve already suspected it. Moreover, the movie carries a hint of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” as a band of young women covertly fight supernatural creatures. The Powerpuff Girls also lend their charm to the storyline. If the animation style in this film looks reminiscent, it’s because Sony Animation Studios were responsible for its creation, the same studio behind the two “Spider-Verse” movies.
Under the direction of Maggie Change and Chris Appelhans, the upcoming film boasts an impressive cast including Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun. The K-pop themed supernatural series, titled “KPop Demon Hunters”, is set to make its debut on Netflix on June 20th.
