KPop Demon Hunters Sequel in the Works as Netflix and Sony Begin Talks

The popular animated series “KPop Demon Hunters” moves one step forward towards a new installment. Discussions are ongoing between Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix regarding a continuation, spurred by the series’ remarkable success on the streaming platform and in cinemas.

Netflix’s Biggest Animated Film Ever

Following its debut in June, “KPop Demon Hunters” has set a new record as Netflix’s most-viewed English-language film ever, racking up over 236 million views, surpassing “Red Notice”. In addition, it made history theatrically during its special sing-along showings in late August, debuting at No.1 with an estimated box office revenue of $19.2 million – a first for Netflix.

The film’s enduring appeal is equally impressive. Time and again, children and families find themselves drawn back to watch it, boosting its streaming figures and fueling calls for a sequel. Moreover, the movie’s soundtrack has achieved historic feats, making headlines as the first to place four songs simultaneously in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, with Huntr/x’s “Golden” leading the charge.

The Sony–Netflix Deal

In 2021, during the pandemic, Sony entered into an agreement with Netflix for a total sum of $135 million – the movie’s production cost of $100 million and an extra $25 million fee. This deal granted Netflix exclusive streaming rights, while Sony retained a portion of the soundtrack sales and publishing income. It’s worth noting that all merchandise rights are owned by Netflix alone.

Although certain experts within the industry believe Sony made a concession by not releasing the film in theaters themselves, this strategy appears to have yielded significant profits. Sony might even stand to earn profit margins ranging from 20% to 30%, which is significantly higher than the usual industry standard.

The collaboration between the two companies has run smoothly, thanks in part to their shared past. Notably, Netflix’s head of animation, Hannah Minghella, has worked with the current head of Sony Animation, Kristine Belson, in the past at Sony.

Creative Team and Next Steps

It’s anticipated that directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who previously collaborated on the first film, will be involved in any subsequent installments. They have publicly expressed interest in further exploring the narrative of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey as they navigate the challenges of maintaining their stardom alongside demon hunting.

Discussions are currently in preliminary phases. For the production details to progress, Netflix and Sony need to settle their agreement first. Since neither party can proceed independently, this partnership is crucial.

What’s Next for KPop Demon Hunters

The highly popular K-pop series, KPop Demon Hunters, boasts an enormous streaming viewership, strong theatrical performance, and a soundtrack topping international music charts. Given its crossover success, it’s almost certain that a sequel is on the horizon – what remains to be seen is when the next installment of Huntr/x will officially be announced.

THR first reported on the KPop Demon Hunters sequel talk.
