Netflix and Sony have confirmed that KPop Demon Hunters 2 will be released in 2029. The sequel is officially happening after the first movie became Netflix’s biggest hit and also did surprisingly well in theaters.
A Long Wait, but an Expected One
Creating animated films takes a long time, and this one is being carefully developed, not hurried. Netflix and Sony have finalized agreements with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and have already begun production. While they haven’t confirmed whether the sequel will be shown in many theaters, the success of the first film suggests they’ll likely consider a wider release.
The movie KPop Demon Hunters surprised everyone in Hollywood by becoming the top film at the box office during special sing-along showings. It earned approximately $25 million over the August and Halloween weekends, even though it was also available to stream on Netflix. This success, combined with huge support from fans around the world, has led to plans for a second movie.

The Netflix Phenomenon Continues
Since its release, KPop Demon Hunters has become Netflix’s most popular movie ever, racking up over 325 million views and a staggering 541 million hours of watch time. The show’s soundtrack has also proven to be a hit.
- Hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200
- Went platinum
- Delivered three major singles — “Golden,” “Your Idol,” and “Soda Pop” — on the Billboard Hot 100
You know, “Golden” actually hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 – pretty impressive! And get this, both Mattel and Hasbro are now official toy partners for the movie. That tells me Netflix isn’t just making a one-off film; they’re building a whole franchise here, and they’re in it for the long haul.
Story and Cast
Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo will reprise their roles as the heroines of Huntr/x. The first movie established the story behind their family’s history of fighting demons, and co-director Maggie Kang has said the sequel will explore that backstory and the characters’ personal histories in more detail, expanding on what could fit into the original film’s runtime.
Kang mentioned earlier this year that they’ve created a lot of material that could be used to develop character histories and plot details, but many questions still need to be addressed.
Fans can expect more supernatural battles, more emotional stakes, and — obviously — more music.
