As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with decades of immersion into these vibrant universes under my belt, let me express my profound disappointment at the recent film adaptations of Gorr the God Butcher and Carnage.
Worldwide debut today: ‘Venom: The Last Dance’! But it seems critics find it an ordinary entry within the series. Despite high anticipation, particularly due to hints about Knull, the King in Black, many fans were expecting more.
Initially, we had our doubts, but as anticipated, Kelly Marcel, the movie’s writer and director, clarified that Knull won’t serve as the primary antagonist. However, there’s a possibility he could appear in the future of the cinematic universe. The question remains whether his role will be within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we’re yet to find out.
There’s chatter that ‘Spider-Man 4’ may feature Knull as the primary antagonist, given his connections to characters like Gorr the God Butcher and Carnage who have been seen in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the Spider-Verse (SSU). If these characters are still present in their respective worlds, Knull’s arrival could potentially lead to a grand return for them.
In the movies ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder,’ respectively, the characters Carnage and Gorr met their ends. Both of these films were released recently, but unfortunately, they received unfavorable reviews from critics. The portrayal of both characters, particularly Gorr, was a subject of criticism as many fans felt they were presented in a way that diminished their seriousness or even made them appear comical.
In the comics, Gorr and Carnage are portrayed as terrifying and formidable adversaries for Thor and Venom respectively. Yet, in their film adaptations, both characters have been shown to be less destructive, killing only a few individuals and succumbing relatively quickly upon encountering opposition.
In an alternate scenario, if those characters hadn’t perished, they might have assumed significant roles within Knull’s narrative. For instance, Carnage could have taken on a significant antagonist role in ‘Venom: The Last Dance’. Similarly, Gorr could have encountered the forger of his weapon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, possibly intertwining with Spider-Man’s tale post ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. However, it didn’t transpire as planned; instead, Gorr failed to fully embody the God Butcher character as intended in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’.
There’s speculation that Carnage might make a comeback, as hinted in a sneak peek for Venom 3. This has sparked ideas about his potential entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Knull. Given that symbiotes like Carnage are tough to eliminate due to their collective consciousness and ability to traverse significant obstacles, including interdimensional boundaries, it’s plausible that he could reappear in another universe.
Regarding Gorr, it appears there’s a new chapter for Thor. Though ‘Thor 5’ is in the works, it seems unlikely the studio will revisit or reference Gorr, given fan feedback on the villain. It seems as though the studio wants to move past Gorr, much like we might do with an unwanted memory.
Knull might still connect with All-Black, but Gorr probably won’t return to the MCU.
