Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2: Mysteria Ecclesiae Hands-On Impressions – The Final Chapter

When I finished playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 for the first time, I felt a mix of sadness and satisfaction. I was happy to see Henry’s story conclude in such a grand way, even though I knew it meant his adventures were over. While some DLC added to his time in Bohemia, it was clear he’d eventually lay down his sword. Now, with the release of Mysteria Ecclesiae, that bittersweet feeling returns. It’s the last story expansion for Henry, and it really delivers in all the important areas, making it a fitting end to his journey.

Detective Henry is On the Case

Let’s start with this: Mysteria Ecclesiae isn’t something you need to finish after beating the main game. You can begin it as soon as you get to Kuttenberg, whether you’re starting a new game or are nearing the end of one. It’s mostly a self-contained story and, as far as I can tell, doesn’t have a big impact on the main questline.

After a conversation with a known contact, Henry begins working as a bodyguard for Albich of Uniczow, a celebrated physician. Their investigation takes them to a monastery where a minor illness is affecting some of the residents, and it’s now up to the doctor and Kuttenberg’s top investigator to discover the cause.

You’ll spend some time exploring the monastery, getting to know its layout and the people within. Just when you think you’ve figured things out, a crisis hits, and the entire place goes into lockdown. You’ll be confined to this location for the duration of the downloadable content, but you can resume your overall exploration once it’s finished. It’s a good idea to level up your character and finish any side quests beforehand, as the expansion took me about 10 hours to complete, and you’ll be largely confined during that time.

I won’t give away any important plot points, as the story is best experienced with a sense of surprise. While this downloadable content has the strongest narrative of the three, it doesn’t introduce any new gameplay mechanics. In that respect, Legacy of the Forge is better. However, for a truly compelling story, Mysteria Ecclesiae shines and really showcases Warhorse’s talent for storytelling.

A Much Better Monastery Experience

The word “monastery” might remind some players of difficult moments in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. However, Mysteria Ecclesiea is designed to be more relaxed, allowing players plenty of time to explore the monastery grounds and buildings. There are also side quests available as you work to unravel the central mystery.

Okay, so this DLC isn’t adding any totally new ways to play the game, but it’s really leaning into two things: alchemy and stealth. Alchemy will be useful for some of the side stuff, but honestly, stealth is going to be huge. You’ll be spending a lot of time avoiding guards to get things done, so you better get comfortable sneaking around! I’m definitely planning on using my stealth gear a lot.

I was initially worried the quests might be too simple, given that the entire expansion is set in just one place. But I was pleasantly surprised! The monastery is actually massive, with tons of rooms to discover and sneak into. There’s a huge cellar that feels like a labyrinth, and you can even climb scaffolding to find new ways around the guards.

A major part of Mysteria Ecclesiae is its quests. While generally simple – often just traveling between two locations – they aren’t linear and offer multiple paths to different results. For example, early in the game, I encountered a side quest to heal a woman. I could have chosen to ignore it, and I’m not sure what would have happened then. But, being the helpful type, I decided to assist her.

During the game, I had an optional goal to locate a book with more details about a character’s illness. I wasn’t able to find it, so I chose a different way to help her. While the quest concluded as it did, I often think about how things might have changed if I’d discovered that book. This really highlights what Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 – and its expansion, Mysteria Ecclesiae – do exceptionally well. They create that sense of “what if,” which is crucial for making a game something you want to play again and again.

While the game’s quest progression wasn’t always perfect, and some players might find it uneven, I rarely felt frustrated. Overall, the story was captivating and kept me thoroughly engaged, which was a major highlight.

So Long, Hero

It’s bittersweet to see Henry put down his sword for good. He’s one of my all-time favorite video game heroes, and this marks the end of his journey. While it’s sad to say goodbye, I’m also satisfied because Mysteria Ecclesiae is a truly exceptional story from Warhorse Studios. I’m happy this adventure is Henry of Skalitz’s last, as it concludes his story in a stunning, cinematic, and captivating way.
