With The Outer Worlds 2, Xbox Game Studios and Obsidian Entertainment capped off a great year, following their release of Avowed. Critics generally liked the game, highlighting its story, choices, and combat. Currently, it holds a Metascore of 84, based on 52 reviews.
Despite the generally positive reception, some disagree. Daniel Vávra, the director of the well-received Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, recently gave his game a 7/10 on Twitter and expressed disappointment with the situation at Obsidian Entertainment.
Despite having the resources of Microsoft and fifteen years to work on it, the team behind my favorite games, Fallout and New Vegas, hasn’t been able to innovate beyond their established gameplay formula. They haven’t introduced any truly new features to update the experience.
Vávra challenged people to imagine a single, innovative game feature that wasn’t present in classic games like Deus Ex or the original Fallout, which were released over 25 years ago. He passionately argued for a truly dynamic and open game world, saying, “I want a world that feels alive and reacts to the player! Not just endless loot, repetitive tasks, loading screens, and grinding in a predictable, pre-designed environment.”
When informed that many of the developers behind Fallout: New Vegas and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 had moved on, he said that wasn’t quite true, explaining that many of the original leaders and core team members are still running things.
Vávra seems to want a system more aligned with his original vision, although it’s unclear if he’s talking about “loot boxes” specifically. Regardless, the gaming industry has shown that both types of games – story-driven action RPGs and large-scale, immersive medieval sandbox games – can be successful.
Many fans would love to see Obsidian Entertainment tackle a larger, more expansive RPG, similar to their Pillars of Eternity but with the same level of funding and scope as Baldur’s Gate 3. Unfortunately, a project like that isn’t in the works currently.
Fans of The Outer Worlds 2 will be happy to hear that two story expansions are currently being developed. Details about what these expansions will include and when they’ll be released haven’t been announced yet.
I’d give it a 7 out of 10. What’s really disappointing, though, is that the team behind my all-time favorite games, Fallout and New Vegas, hasn’t been able to release a new title in 15 years – even with Microsoft’s resources and all the latest technology at their disposal.

Not really. Lot of the key people and founders are still in charge.
